NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. His family confirmed that he passed away on Thursday, February 19, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane publicly revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ALS. He died less than a year after sharing his condition with fans, continuing to work even after making his diagnosis public.

In a statement shared with People magazine, his family spoke about his final days and the strength he showed throughout his illness.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The family added that throughout his health journey, Dane became a strong advocate for ALS awareness and research. They noted that he remained determined to make a difference for others facing the same diagnosis.
“Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time,” the statement concluded.
From ‘McSteamy’ to Hollywood mainstay
Dane first appeared on 'Grey’s Anatomy' in 2005 during Season 2. What began as a single appearance quickly turned into a fan-favorite role. His portrayal of the charming and confident Dr Mark Sloan, widely known by fans as “McSteamy,” earned him a permanent spot on the main cast starting in Season 3. He remained with the long-running ABC drama until Season 8.
In recent years, Dane introduced himself to a new generation of viewers through his role in 'Euphoria,' where he played Cal Jacobs. He had previously shared that he intended to continue filming Season 3 despite his diagnosis.
