WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Jamie Raskin (D-Md) has voiced sharp criticism of his Republican colleagues in Congress following a closed-door meeting with former President Donald Trump earlier this week.

Raskin labeled the gathering and the positivity surrounding it as “a scandal and a disgrace” during an interview on MSNBC’s 'The Weekend' on June 15.

Jamie Raskin fumes at Donald Trump's visit

“Well, he came back to the scene of his crime,” Raskin stated, referring to Trump’s first visit to Capitol Hill since the January 6, 2021, attacks. “He made no apology to 150 Capitol officers, MPD, Montgomery County police officers who were injured and wounded by the mob he unleashed against us on that day.”

Raskin's remarks come in response to Trump's effort to portray a united Republican front.

“There were Republicans who had at least tried to cry foul at that moment, who now have completely swallowed all their misgivings … [and] they’re trying to pretend like nothing big happened and Donald Trump can feel proud that he has consolidated cultish type control and power over the Republican Party,” Raskin continued. “But it’s a scandal and a disgrace for the country.”

In his brief comments to the press after the meeting, Trump highlighted the “great relationship” he claims to have with Republican lawmakers, assuring that any internal differences would be “worked out.” He appeared to mend ties with some of his staunchest critics within the party, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky) and outgoing Utah Sen Mitt Romney.

Trump has also been actively supporting Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) in recent weeks, even inviting him to speak at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Johnson, who attended Trump’s hush money trial in Manhattan—a trial that ended with a historic conviction—was part of the GOP delegation during the Capitol Hill meetings.

“All they talked about was politics, how they’re going to try to get more people elected to give Donald Trump more power,” Raskin said after the panel played a clip from Johnson's post-meeting remarks. Johnson had asserted that the party was “unified” in its goal of securing victories in the upcoming elections.

When asked if the Republicans' embrace of Trump might foreshadow future developments should Trump be re-elected, Raskin agreed.

“What’s happening in the Republican Party, what’s happening with congressional Republicans: Absolute corruption of their duty,” Raskin stated. “I mean, we swear an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States not to uphold one guy or one party, or the interests of one billionaire sugar daddy, and yet, that’s what’s taking place now.”

His comments came in light of the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to invalidate a ban on bump stocks—a device that can convert semi-automatic weapons into ones capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute.

The bump stock ban was originally implemented by Trump after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, where a gunman used the device to kill over 60 concertgoers, marking the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

The recent Supreme Court ruling coincides with Trump’s endorsement by the National Rifle Association and his promise to be the “best friend” of the Second Amendment, vowing more protections for gun owners if he wins the presidency again in November, The Hill reported.

Jamie Raskin excoriated on social media

Raskin’s outspoken comments quickly sparked a backlash on social media, with many mocking and criticizing him.

"Well, he can’t afford to make the analogy accurate by calling the Republicans the sugar daddies," one posted on X.

"He should be talking about Hunter's sugar daddy," another wrote.

"He’s just jealous," someone else added.

"I really think that ratskins head is an empty shell," a comment read.

"This guy should be in prison... GITMO to be exact!" another insisted.
