WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned a 6-3 Supreme Court ruling on Friday, June 14 that overturned a Trump-era ban on bump stocks.

Schumer's strong reaction included a call for Congress to pass legislation to counter the decision and ban.

In response to the ruling, Schumer reacted to the decision with posts on X (formerly Twitter) and a statement.

“The far-right Supreme Court continues their unprecedented assault on public safety by reversing the commonsense guidance issued in 2018 by the ATF," Schumer wrote in a statement.

"Bump stocks have played a devastating role in many of the horrific mass shootings in our country, but sadly it’s no surprise to see the Supreme Court roll back this necessary public safety rule as they push their out-of-touch extreme agenda," the Senate majority leader added.

"They’re even further to the right of Donald Trump," Schumer lashed out at the conservative majority Supreme Court.

Chuck Schumer calls to 'permanently close this loophole' of bump stocks via legislation

Schumer stressed the need for legislative action to address the issue and ban it once and for all.

“As I warned the Trump administration at the time, the only way to permanently close this loophole is through legislation," Schumer continued.

"Senate Democrats are ready to pass legislation to ban bump stocks but we will need votes from Senate Republicans," he concluded.

Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, found that the ATF could not classify bump stocks as machine guns because they do not allow a rifle to fire multiple shots per “single function” of the trigger, The Hill reported.

“Even if one aspect of the weapon’s operation could be seen as ‘automatic,’ that would not mean the weapon ‘shoots … automatically more than one shot … by a single function of the trigger,’” wrote Justice Thomas.

Internet reacts to Chuck Schumer's comments on the Supreme Court's bump stock ruling

Online reactions to Schumer's comments were critical asking why the regulations weren't addressed beforehand while some expressed disagreement merely for being Second Amendment supporters.

"Leave the courts alone," one person wrote on X. Another commented, "Shall not be infringed. You keep trying and SCOTUS will keep denying."

Some responses were more personal and critical of Schumer himself. "Retire Chuck!" one user wrote. Another highlighted the impact of the Las Vegas shooting, stating, "60 people were killed in Las Vegas. Hundreds were injured. A sad ruling by the SCOTUS."

Others defended the Supreme Court's decision, pointing out perceived inconsistencies in Schumer's arguments.

"It is beyond laughable that you want to attack Trump on 2nd amendment issues, while the president's son has been found guilty ON GUN CHARGES!!!" one user wrote.

Another added, "Doesn't your job dictate that you do that the first time?" One wrote, "You mean to put back the Trump ruling!!! lol"

The Trump administration banned bump stocks through executive action after the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, the deadliest in US history, which killed 60 people.

However, the Supreme Court's conservative majority ruled that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its authority by implementing this ban.
