Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife ripped as 'son' Mark Martin claims he hasn't 'heard much from them'
WASHINGTON, DC: The "son" of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently claimed he had been cut off from the man who brought him up.
Mark Martin, 32, spoke with Business Insider on Tuesday, June 11, about his life prior to his incarceration on drug-related charges. He is the grandson of Justice Thomas' sister, Emma Mae Martin, according to Newsweek.
What did Mark Martin reveal about Justice Clarence Thomas during his Business Insider interview?
Justice Thomas and his wife, Ginni Thomas, were Mark's legal guardians from 1997 to 2010 and he lived with the couple in their Virginia home.
Yet, in an interview with Business Insider this week, the 32-year-old stated that he hasn't "really heard much from them in a long time," adding, "I tried to communicate with them a couple of times, but I've never gotten any response."
According to Justice Thomas' 2007 C-Span interview, he and his wife were bringing up Mark "as a son."
"For me, in so many ways, it's rewarding because it's brought me, again, full circle," told Thomas to C-Span at the time, adding, "I was about the age my grandfather was when he took my brother and me. And Mark was about the age my brother and I were when he took us in."
Mark's recent comments come as the jurist continues to receive flak for accepting vacation trips funded by prominent Republican donor Harlan Crow.
A 2023 report by ProPublica revealed that Crow has been funding Justice Thomas and his wife's lavish getaways on a yearly basis for more than twenty years. It also outlined how Justice Thomas had traveled on Crow's yacht and jet.
Last week, the jurist formally disclosed two trips paid for by Crow on financial disclosure forms.
Justice Thomas issued a statement responding to the report after it was published, saying, "Harlan and Kathy Crow are among our dearest friends, and we have been friends for over twenty-five years. As friends do, we have joined them on a number of family trips during the more than quarter century we have known them."
Attorney George Conway responded to the disclosure on X (formerly Twitter), writing, "I'm sorry. It's long past time for there to be a comprehensive criminal investigation, and congressional investigation, of Justice Thomas and his finances and his taxes. What he has taken, and what he has failed to disclose, is beyond belief, and has been so for quite some time."
"I guess they looked into Randolph-Macon Academy because Harlan Crow actually graduated from there, so I guess that was behind their decision to send me there," said Mark during the Business Insider interview.
Mark, who was arrested in June 2023, is currently in jail awaiting trial on drugs and weapons charges. If found guilty, he could face at least 25 years in prison under South Carolina's mandatory minimum sentencing laws for certain types of drug offenses.
Internet slams Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife after their 'son' Mark Martin reveals they have cut him off
Netizens wasted no time in calling out Justice Thomas and his wife after Mark's interview came to light.
One remarked, "Ginni won't respond? Hold out some cash to see if she comes running? Clarence would take a new RV if you want to chat with him," and another commented, "'Son' wasn't invited on the extravagant trips? He must've voted the wrong way."
"His gifts weren't good enough," quipped a person, while someone else remarked, "These magas toss their own families away like it's nothing."
One more expressed, "Republicans think Clarence Thomas behavior is normal and Joe Biden‘s love and support for his son is the outlier. You’ll never get them to understand because that’s just the way they are."
"I’m not really seeing how this is a bad thing for Martin," shared another person.
