Rob Reiner's son Nick to spend 33rd birthday behind bars with 'no special treatment'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Nick Reiner is spending his 33rd birthday in custody, 11 years after celebrating his 22nd birthday on the red carpet with his father, filmmaker Rob Reiner.
Nick is accused of fatally stabbing Rob and his mother, Michele Reiner, and is being held without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility. His birthday on Monday, September 14, will be treated like any other day at the jail, with no special privileges.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department representative told Page Six that “Birthdays are treated like every other day, no special treatment from LASD.” Inmates can access telephones according to module schedules and have in-person or video visits, but “There are no additional privileges for birthdays.”
Friends and family can send Nick mail through normal channels, although it is inspected for contraband before being delivered. He said, “If there was anything birthday related, the onus would be on the inmate’s family/friends/network to time the mail for it to arrive on the normal mail schedule.”
“According to this schedule, September 14 will be a normal visiting day and no additional privileges are given for birthdays,” the representative said.
LASD also provided its current commissary list, which includes snacks, candy, desserts, and beverages. Among the available items are Dolly Madison chocolate cupcakes for $1.85, Banana Deluxe Moon Pies for $1.66, chocolate chip cookies for $3.04, and Mascots mini peanut butter cups for $4.85.
The circumstances are a stark contrast to Nick’s 22nd birthday in September 2015, when he walked the red carpet with Rob at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of 'Being Charlie'. Rob directed the semi-autobiographical film, while Nick co-wrote it with Matt Elisofon, drawing on his struggles in rehab.
Nick Reiner faces charges as brother Jake recalls parents’ deaths
The 78-year-old filmmaker and his 70-year-old wife were found stabbed to death inside their home on December 14, 2025. Nick was arrested later that day and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances of multiple murders and personal use of a knife.
It was reported that Nick had gotten into an argument with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party a day earlier. He had also been diagnosed with schizophrenia before the killings and had a long history of substance abuse.
His brother Jake and sister Romy have not spoken to him since his arrest. Nick has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court Tuesday, one day after his birthday, for a pretrial hearing.
Eight months after the deaths, Jake gave his first interview about losing his parents and his brother’s arrest. In a 'Good Morning America' interview, he said, “I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. … He’s in jail.”
“And now it’s me and Romy,” Jake continued, adding that it had been eight months but felt like “eight years” and “eight minutes” at the same time. He said, “Every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
