MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN: On the second day of the Republican National Convention, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis managed to elicit a chuckle from former President Donald Trump and rouse the crowd with his remarks.

The hotly-anticipated event took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 16, and was marked by themes of party unity and strong critiques of the current administration.

Ron DeSantis rips Biden with 'Weekend at Bernie's' analogy

Ron DeSantis began his speech with a humorous yet pointed analogy, referencing the 1989 comedy film Weekend at Bernie’s, where two employees manipulate their deceased boss's body to make it appear he is still alive.

DeSantis likened President Joe Biden’s administration to this scenario, implying that Biden is not effectively running the country. “Let's send Joe Biden back to his basement and let's send Donald Trump back to the White House!” he declared, which was met with roaring applause.

DeSantis joined other Republicans in questioning President Biden's mental and physical fitness for office. He criticized Biden's handling of various national issues, stating, "Life was more affordable when Donald Trump was president, our border was safer under the Trump administration, and our country was respected when Donald Trump was our commander-in-chief."

DeSantis went on to label Biden's presidency as a failure, highlighting the tragic death of 13 service members in Afghanistan as a result of what he called Biden's "dereliction of duty."

"As a veteran, I was appalled when 13 of our service members were killed in Afghanistan due to Joe Biden’s dereliction of duty. As a citizen, as a husband, and as a father, I am alarmed that the current president of the United States lacks the capability to discharge the duties of his office," he continued.

DeSantis stressed the need for a president who could lead effectively around the clock, not just during typical office hours. "Our enemies do not confine their designs to between 10 am and 4 pm. We need a commander-in-chief who can lead 24 hours a day and 7 days a week," he said.

The Florida Governor reiterated his support for Trump, asserting, "America cannot afford four more years of a Weekend at Bernie’s presidency." His remark about Biden drew laughter from Trump, who was shown on the jumbotron at Fiserv Forum. "That's great," Trump seemed to say in response to the joke.

DeSantis didn’t stop at humor; he went on to criticize Biden's policies, particularly on immigration.

“But let’s be honest. Let’s be honest here. Biden is just a figurehead,” DeSantis added. “He’s a tool for imposing a leftist agenda on the American people. They support open borders, allowing millions and millions of illegal aliens to pour into our country and to burden our communities, but just don’t send any to Martha’s Vineyard, then they get really upset!”

The relationship between Trump and DeSantis has been complicated. Trump played a crucial role in DeSantis’s rise to prominence, aiding in his first primary victory, which led to his governorship in Florida in 2018.

However, tensions arose when DeSantis decided to run against Trump in the Republican primary, an act Trump deemed a betrayal. Despite this, DeSantis has since dropped out of the race and returned to supporting Trump.

Nikki Haley, who also challenged Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination, expressed her support for Trump at the Convention. Speaking just days after the assassination attempt on Trump, Haley stressed the need for party unity, Mediaite reported.

“For the sake of our nation, we have to go with Donald Trump,” she said. “You don’t have to agree with Trump 100 per cent of the time to vote for him. Take it from me. I haven’t always agreed with President Trump, but we agree more often than we disagree.”

Ron DeSantis lauded on social media

DeSantis's remarks, especially his Weekend at Bernie’s joke, garnered praise on social media.

"That was a hit!!" one posted on X.

"That was funny. And he is right. Bernie needs to rest!" another wrote.

"That was a great line and so true!" someone else added.

"What treasure to see him smile and laugh," a comment read, referring to Trump.

"Trump always had my vote but I love DeSantis I don't care what anyone says. I hope he runs in the future," another gushed.
