Rosie O'Donnell says 4-hour prison visit led to first real talk with daughter Chelsea in 10 years
MARINETTE COUNTY, WISCONSIN: Rosie O'Donnell is opening up about a deeply personal moment with her daughter, Chelsea O'Donnell. One month after visiting the 28-year-old in prison, the comedian and actress revealed that the reunion marked the longest conversation they had shared in nearly a decade.
Reflecting on the emotional visit, Rosie said spending hours together behind bars allowed them to reconnect in a way they had not in years. Her latest comments offer a hopeful update on their relationship after a long period of estrangement and Chelsea's ongoing legal and personal struggles.
Chelsea is currently being held at Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Wisconsin after her probation was revoked over multiple felony charges.

Looking back on the reunion, the 'A League of Their Own' star told Page Six, "(It)was the first conversation I've had with her in 10 years that lasted more than 25 minutes." She added, "The first time that I saw her in a consistent way was the four hours in the prison."
According to O'Donnell, the visit also allowed her to see a different side of her daughter. "She’s growing up," Rosie added. "And I hope that her future is brighter than this past decade has been.”
O'Donnell said it was the first time she had witnessed what she described as genuine empathy from her daughter in years.
The 'View' alum noted that Chelsea has been sober for “almost two years now, and that’s a very big part, you know; she was born addicted, and when I was adopting, I thought, 'Well, love can cure everything,' but I don’t know that that’s true."
"I’ve asked for Chelsea’s input," the Emmy winner explained. “I sent it to her and said, ‘I’d really love to get your voice heard and know what I perceive to be your voice... and I think she’s ready to do that now."

Alongside the picture, O'Donnell wrote, "My child chelsea belle- before addiction took over her life - i loved her then i love her now as she faces a scary future," before adding, "Prayers are welcomed," and including hashtags about addiction awareness, love, and family.
Chelsea's prison sentence came months after she was placed on probation in March 2024, when she pleaded guilty to felony charges, including resisting or obstructing an officer, bail jumping, and possession of illegal substances.
Rosie and her former partner, Kelli Carpenter, adopted Chelsea shortly after she was born in 1997.
