Sadie Sink reveals she landed 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' role without auditioning
SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY: Actress Sadie Sink has shared new details about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' revealing that she landed the role without an audition and that the level of secrecy surrounding the project has been unlike anything she has experienced before.
While remaining tight-lipped about her mystery character, the 'Stranger Things' star also reflected on protecting Marvel secrets, working alongside actor Tom Holland, and reacting to the online theories surrounding her role.
Sadie Sink addresses Marvel role speculation
Sink revealed that the opportunity to join 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' came without an audition after previously working with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the 2017 film 'The Glass Castle.' According to her, she did not receive the script until she arrived in London for filming.
Speaking about the experience of protecting Marvel's closely guarded secrets, she told Nylon, “You just don’t share the secret, it’s not that hard.” Despite appearing opposite Holland in the upcoming film, she has not been featured in any trailers or promotional material, while speculation about her mystery role continues online.
Among the most persistent theories is that she will portray a younger Jean Grey as Marvel prepares to introduce a younger generation of X-Men. However, the actor has refused to confirm or deny the speculation.
Reflecting on the scale of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sink said, “I knew that Marvel was a big deal and had a big brand, especially Spider-Man. I know there’s a huge fan base, but it feels really big. I think these blockbuster movies are a whole different beast.”
The actor also acknowledged that online fan theories occasionally prove accurate.
During an appearance on 'The Tonight Show' Starring Jimmy Fallon, she admitted that keeping the role secret has been “torture,” while revealing that speculation about her joining the franchise surfaced before any official offer.
She said, “I found out through online theories. There was speculation online that said, ‘Sadie Sink is going to be in the new Spider-Man.’ I was like, ‘Hmm? I am?’ And sure enough, two days later, they asked me to do it. So yeah, those theories, there’s sometimes some truth to it.”
Sadie Sink praises Tom Holland's support
Previously, Sink also addressed speculation about playing Mary Jane Watson, telling Entertainment Weekly, “A lot of people forget that hair color can change, but yeah, I understand all of the theories.”
Remaining secretive about the role, she added, “People will just have to wait and see. I’m excited for all of it to maybe be put to rest.”
Speaking specifically about the Jean Grey rumors, she said, “That was happening before I even knew that I would be working on this project. I was like, ‘Wait! What are people talking about?’”
While discussing the transition into the Marvel franchise, she had nothing but praise for Holland, saying the actor helped make the experience comfortable from the start.
“It was interesting stepping into that space and being a little bit of an outsider in that way,” Sink said, adding, “But he could not have been more welcoming, and just the whole crew in general. He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease.”
Although she has built a successful screen career through 'Stranger Things' and now 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' the actor said theater continues to be her top priority.
“I think theater will always be a priority for me,” Sink explained, adding, “I love filming TV, too, and there's so many things that I want to do in that space as well, but I think the work that I have accomplished just in the last two plays that I've done, it feels like, I don't know, it just feels right.”
