Cullen was stationed on the island as a United States Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class, his family said on GoFundMe.
He and Kedar met while attending Farmingdale High School in New York. After spending more than 10 years together, Cullen planned to ask Kedar for her hand in marriage, News 12 Long Island reported.
Cullen sent a photo of the ring to his mother as he planned to pop the question on June 1 when they were expecting to attend a game between their hometown MLB team, the New York Mets, and their local team, the Seattle Mariners.
The US Navy helped transport Cullen’s body back to New York, according to News 12 Long Island.
Meanwhile, family members raised money via GoFundMe to help bring Kedar home and pay for funeral expenses. More than $54,000 has been raised through the online fundraiser as of midday Friday, May 10.
