Scott Bessent warns Democrats could undo Trump tax cuts, points to one campaign
WASHINGTON, DC: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent used Labor Day to warn that the “radical left” wants to repeal Trump-era tax cuts, with James Talarico offering a specific political example.
Bessent wrote on X on Monday, September 7, that working families have claimed billions in tax relief through the Working Families Tax Cuts, while more than 900,000 jobs have been created.
His warning came in a Labor Day statement celebrating American workers and defending the administration’s tax policy.

Scott Bessent points to the tax-cut fight
Bessent framed the tax cuts as a benefit workers should retain, saying, “America’s workers deserve to keep more of what they earn, not pay more in taxes.”
He wrote, “Under POTUS, real wages are outpacing inflation and low-income workers have experienced faster wage growth than higher earners,” tying his Labor Day message to the administration’s economic claims.
The secretary said more than 900,000 private-sector jobs have been created and that working families have claimed $82 billion in tax relief through the Working Families Tax Cuts.
The political argument becomes more specific with James Talarico, a Democratic Texas Senate candidate whose campaign platform calls for a “fairer” tax system.
Talarico has said wealthy Americans who are willing to be taxed more are welcome to join the movement he is building.
“I’ve told every wealthy person I’ve come across in this race: If you are ok with getting taxed more, if you’re ok with me limiting your influence in politics, you are welcome to join this movement that we are building,” he said in a clip.
He thanked billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban for being part of the movement.
James Talarico opposed Trump's tax legislation
Talarico also opposed the “big, beautiful bill” referenced by Bessent, which kept tax cuts in place for middle-class Americans and added benefits, including no tax on tips and overtime.
Talarico instead called the legislation the “big ugly bill” and claimed it was done “to cut taxes for their donors.”
His campaign platform said “giant corporations and the wealthiest Americans” must “pay their fair share,” giving Bessent’s broader Labor Day warning a specific political example.
Bessent did not name Talarico in his Labor Day statement, but the Democratic candidate’s platform and opposition to Trump’s tax legislation provide a specific example of the tax increases Bessent warned about.
Mike Johnson also attacked Democratic votes
Last month, House Speaker Mike Johnson reminded Americans that Democrats voted against lower taxes, no tax on tips, and Trump accounts for children.
Johnson also said Democrats voted against keeping men out of women’s sports and increasing border security, expanding the political argument beyond the tax-cut issue.
For Bessent, however, the Labor Day message centered on whether workers should keep the tax relief he says they are already receiving.
“This Labor Day, we celebrate the American worker and the policies that are putting their families first,” he said.
Bessent also warned, “The radical left wants to repeal these tax cuts,” directly framing the dispute over the legislation as a question of whether workers will retain the tax relief he highlighted.
