MIAMI, FLORIDA: Republican Sen Marco Rubio faced people’s wrath online as he formally endorsed Donald Trump for president, despite previously calling him “an embarrassment” and a “con artist.”

The 52-year-old Republican explained his choice in a post on X, where he berated the Biden administration's track record and claimed that Trump's "extraordinary actions" are required to "fix the disaster" facing the nation.

He also supported his endorsement citing his work with Trump to double the child tax credit in the 2017 tax reform legislation and the sanctions Trump imposed on Venezuela and Cuba during his presidency.

“When Trump was in [the White House] I achieved major policies I had worked on for years (like expanded Child Tax Credit & tough sanctions on the regime in Cuba & Venezuela) because we had a President who didn’t cave to special interests or let bureaucrats block us,” Rubio wrote in a post on X.

“I support Trump because that kind of leadership is the ONLY way we will get the extraordinary actions needed to fix the disaster Biden has created. It’s time to get on with the work of beating Biden & saving America!” he continued.

Rubio's endorsement implies that both Florida senators are supporting Trump over their state's governor, following Florida Senator Rick Scott's endorsement of Trump in November after promising to remain out of the election.

Why did Rubio criticize Trump?

The Florida Senator previously ran against Trump in 2016 when he received an endorsement for his presidential campaign from then-South Carolina Gov Nikki Haley.

During his campaign, Rubio called him “an embarrassment” and a “con artist” before bowing out of the primary race. "It's time to pull [Trump's] mask off so that people can see what we're dealing with here. What we are dealing with here, my friend, is a con artist. He is a con artist,” he told the crowd during a campaign rally in Dallas, Texas at that time.

He continued to make fun of Trump's insults to him on Twitter and stated that he had come to two conclusions about why Trump had spelled things wrong in his hateful remarks.

"Number one, that's how they spell those words at the Wharton School of Business where he went. Or number two, just like Trump Tower, he must have hired a foreign worker to do his own tweets," he said.

Rubio attacked Trump for calling him "Mr Meltdown" and claimed that the previous night, Trump was the one experiencing a meltdown, as per ABC News.

"Let me tell you something, during one of the breaks, two of the breaks, he went backstage, he was having a meltdown. First, he had this little makeup thing applying, like makeup around his mustache, because he had one of those sweat mustaches. He wanted a full-length mirror. Maybe to make sure his pants weren't wet. I don't know," he joked at the time.

However, since then, he has been a cautious backer of Trump, avoiding questions about Trump's serial election fraud and refusing to denounce the former president's conduct following the January 6 uprising.

Internet shreds Rubio over endorsement

Rubio’s post has garnered immense social media attention, with users slamming him for endorsing Trump despite his past hateful remarks.

“Rubio had always been a spineless, self-serving coward. Nobody is surprised,” one user blasted him. “I’m sorry you have no dignity. Pathetic,” a second user said.

“The guy who was routinely humiliated by the guy calling him Lil' Marco. Perfect,” a third trolled while a fourth wrote, “Spineless. And, I’m sure that won’t go over well w/DeSantis. Looks like a collision course will ensure for these elected FL officials.”

“He is one of the more spectacular falls from grace,” another user said. “I will not be shocked by how far he has fallen. Beyond disgusting,” someone else wrote.
