BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA: Late Night host Seth Meyers didn't mince words as he addressed Donald Trump's choice of JD Vance as his vice presidential candidate following the recent assassination attempt on the former president elaborating that “political violence must be condemned in all its forms."
During the segment, Meyers emphasized “an inclusive politics of compassion, empathy, and community,” urging viewers to engage in discussions about “the real work of democracy,” stating, “That’s what we need.”
“What we don’t need are the opportunistic purveyors of paranoia, suspicion and fear who have already rushed to fill the void with incendiary conspiracy theories and lies,” he added, segueing to coverage of the assassination on several news broadcasts.
Trump, who is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when he was shot on stage, with the bullet striking the upper part of his right ear.
The suspected gunman, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was swiftly shot and killed by the Secret Service.
The FBI is spearheading the investigation into the shooting, working alongside the Secret Service and local law enforcement. The rally incident tragically claimed the life of 50-year-old volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore and left two others injured.
Seth Meyers condemns right-wing figures for inflammatory remarks
Among those singled out by Seth Meyers was Trump's VP pick JD Vance, who attributed the assassination attempt to rhetoric from President Joe Biden's campaign.
“The premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance penned on X on Saturday. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”
Meyers rebuked Vance and the other voices, including Georgia congresspeople Marjorie Taylor Greene who stated on X that “the Democrat party is flat out evil,” and Mike Collins who wrote that “Joe Biden sent the orders.”
Today is not just some isolated incident.

The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.
That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.
“At a time when things are bad, you are choosing to make things worse,” Meyers claimed. “You are choosing to inflame the national mood at a dangerous moment, rather than show the leadership and basic decency it would take to calm things down. You should be ashamed. Please stop.”
“You’re also wrong,” he added. “Engaging in the work of democracy and peaceful persuasion is the opposite of inciting violence. It’s what we need more of, not less. Accurately describing the dangers of autocracy and warning against attempts to dismantle our democracy have nothing to do with political violence. Speaking plainly about the specter of authoritarianism is not only our democratic right; it’s our civic duty. We must all continue to do it.”
Meyers provided his own analysis of the events on Saturday, offering his perspective on the violence.
“I think it’s important to say that the easy availability of dangerous weapons has made tragedies like this all too common,” he stated.
“Schools, shopping malls, grocery stores, movie theaters, houses of worship and now political rallies have all been infected by this scourge of everyday violence. We cannot accept that. There are too many guns. They’re too easy to get. We must work to change that,” he added.
