WASHINGTON, DC: Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis requested on Monday, April 8, that a Georgia appeals court not review a trial judge's decision permitting her to go on supervising the case concerning election interference against former president Donald Trump and a number of his allies, as per The Hill.

Notably, in March, Judge Scott McAfee declared that there appeared to be a conflict due to Willis' prior relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade. But when Wade quit, he let Willis continue working on the case.

In March, Donald Trump's attorneys filed an application appealing McAfee's ruling and said that "the trial court erred as a matter of law by not requiring dismissal and DA Willis' disqualification."

Responding to Trump's appeal, Willis’ office informed the Georgia Court of Appeals, "Because the applicants have wholly failed to carry their burden of persuasion, this Court should decline interlocutory review."

Notably, in the summer of 2023, Willis accused Trump and over a dozen associates of trying to tamper with Georgia's 2020 election results and Trump entered a not-guilty plea.

However, the case had a weeks-long diversion when Michael Roman, a co-defendant of Trump, revealed proof of a romantic relationship between Willis and Wade, the man in charge of the former president's trial.

Willis and Wade both testified to protect their reputations during a contentious hearing on the subject. They acknowledged their affair but said that it started after Wade was recruited for the case, not before, as the defense lawyers had claimed.

Notably, the prosecution claimed that the two were acquaintances then, while two defense witnesses claimed the couple started dating after attending a 2019 legal conference together.

Moreover, after the highly publicized hearings, McAfee discovered indications of a conflict of interest, but he could not establish one.

Willis’ office wrote in the motion filed on Monday, "There is simply no trial court error to be found in the decision to deny disqualification. Days of evidence and testimony failed to disclose anything like a calculated pre-trial plan designed to prejudice the defendants or secure their convictions."

She added, "The applicants have not identified any public statement injecting the District Attorney’s personal belief as to the defendants’ guilt or appealing to the public weighing of evidence."

However, Willis's other activities, as well as the romance, according to Trump and his co-defendants, amount to more. The defendants applied to the state appeals court, asking it to hear the matter, after McAfee approved their appeal.
