Simone Biles takes a dig at Trump with 'I love my Black job' post, Internet calls her remark 'divisive'
PARIS, FRANCE: Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, who made history and won two gold medals in Paris making her the most decorated US and gymnast, took a swipe at former president Donald Trump in a post Friday, August 2, on X.
The 27-year-old shared a post from singer Ricky Davila who celebrated Biles as she posed for photos clutching her medal and a 'Goat' necklace.
Simone Biles responds to Donald Trump's comment about Black jobs
Simone Biles made these comments hours after winning a gold medal in the individual all-around event. It was her second medal at Paris 2024 Olympics and her overall career sixth.
"Simone Biles being the GOAT, winning Gold medals and dominating gymnastics is her Black job," Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Ricky Davila wrote. "I love my Black job," Biles responded, adding a black heart emoji.
The post appears to be in response to remarks Trump made at a June debate and his recent remarks about presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' racial identity.
"They’re taking Black jobs now and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people," he said about the role immigrants play in the US economy.
"They’re taking Black jobs, and they’re taking Hispanic jobs, and you haven’t seen it yet, but you’re going to see something that’s going to be the worst in our history," he said, according to NBC News.
Donald Trump called Kamala Harris 'Black'
On Wednesday, July 31, at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, Donald Trump threw shade at Kamala Harris saying, "She was always of Indian heritage and she was promoting Indian heritage."
"I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?” he said.
He was asked to define what a "Black job" is. "A Black job is anybody that has a job, that's what it is. Anybody that has a job," he said.
JD Vance's controversial remarks against Simone Biles resurface
Controversial remarks from Senator JD Vance, R-Ohio, also resurfaced this week after Simone Biles' win.
In 2021, Vance, who is Trump's vice-presidential running mate, questioned why the gymnast should be praised after she withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics to focus on her mental health.
Biles had said she developed something gymnasts call the "twisties." "I think it reflects pretty poorly on our sort of therapeutic society that we try to praise people, not for moments of strength, not for moments of heroism, but for their weakest moments," Vance said at the time.
Internet reacts to Simone Biles' 'Black job' post
Internet reacted with mixed emotions to Simone Biles' X post. Even as majority of the fans congratulated her, she also faced backlash from Republican supporters.
"And BABY GIRL, you are good at it! Sooooo damn proud!" wrote Representative Jasmine Crockett in reply to her X post.
One more wrote, "We love you for doing your Black job to the blackest of your abilities."
"With so many Americans, Republicans and Democrats, supporting you and cheering for you Simone Biles, why say something divisive?" wrote another.
One more wrote, "I'm happy you won, but going political is a great way to alienate potential fans. I'm sorry to see you choose this path."
Another added, "This is why we boycott the Olympics. Thanks for confirming I was right to do so!"
One more wrote, "Why racialize your accomplishments? Maybe you could love your AMERICAN job, or better yet, OPPORTUNITY? This is what is wrong with our country... BE BETTER!"
"Don’t let the illegals take it away from you then," wrote one more.
