BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA: Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed his opinion that President Biden's administration might be preventing him from taking executive action to address the surge of migrants on the southern border.

Johnson suggested that the President's staff could be responsible for the delay in decision-making regarding this pressing issue, according to a report from The Hill.

Johnson claimed on Fox Business Friday morning, “He knows that he has the authority. We’ve documented it for him. I’ve read to him the law myself — to the president. Read him the provisions of the law and said, ‘Mr. President, please take action.’”

“I don’t think he’s allowed to do it. I’m not sure Joe Biden is actually making these decisions. I think it’s staff around him, and they’re pushing him to hold the — or to keep the border open,” the House speaker remarked.

What underlying tension between House Speaker Johnson and President Biden?

House Speaker Johnson has been advocating for President Biden to take action on border and migration policy through executive orders.

This includes the reinstatement of the 'Remain in Mexico' policy and the resumption of construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, contending that the 81-year-old Commander-in-Chief does not require new authority from Congress to implement these measures.

The Speaker for the House of Representatives criticized a bipartisan Senate group's proposal, which comprises an increment in Ukraine aid along with border and migration policy changes.

While the specifics of the bill have not yet been released, Speaker Johnson has stated that if the bill's contents mirror the media reports, it is “dead on arrival” in the House.

The White House has contested the notion that President Joe Biden can do more through executive authority and has accused Speaker Mike Johnson of opposing the Senate border deal, despite his previous support for other border legislations, while advocating for executive actions for underlying political reasons.

Former President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has urged Republicans, including Senator Johnson, to reject the Senate border deal.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement earlier this week, “Speaker Johnson claimed he believes action should be taken to secure the border. Yet it is House Republicans who are saying they will block an historic bipartisan border security deal supported by President Biden that will deliver much-needed law enforcement hiring and investments in cutting-edge technology to stop fentanyl trafficking.”

On Thursday, February 1, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that the text of the border-Ukraine deal will be released no later than Sunday.

Despite his criticisms of the reported details of the proposed bill, Johnson has not completely rejected the bill yet.

Johnson said on Fox Business, “The devil is in the details. We’ll check it out. I’m not prejudging anything, but I’ve told them the necessary elements of H.R. 2 are what are required to get control of the border. I’ve been consistent, and that’s our standard. We’ll be looking for that.”
