State Department tells Americans to 'exercise increased caution' as Middle East tensions escalate
WASHINGTON, DC: The US State Department on Saturday, July 18, issued a worldwide caution advising Americans to "exercise increased caution" as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. The advisory urges US citizens, particularly those in the region, to remain alert, monitor official updates and follow guidance issued by US embassies and consulates.
The notice comes as the United States continues military operations against Iran following recent attacks on American forces, raising concerns about broader security risks for US citizens overseas.
State Department warns Americans of security risks and travel disruptions
In its advisory, the State Department said Americans abroad should remain vigilant because the regional security situation could change rapidly. "We remind Americans in the region of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments," the advisory said.
"The Department of State advises Americans worldwide, and especially in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution. Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by their nearest US embassy or consulate."
The department also warned that ongoing hostilities could disrupt international travel through flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures.

Officials noted that US diplomatic facilities, including locations outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted, while cautioning that groups supportive of Iran "may target other US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world."
The department also encouraged travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and review country-specific travel advisories before departing.
Worldwide caution follows renewed US military strikes on Iran
The worldwide caution was issued as military tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to intensify following recent attacks on US personnel in Jordan. US Central Command (CENTCOM) also announced on Saturday that American forces had launched another round of airstrikes against Iran at President Donald Trump's direction.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes were intended to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to "swiftly punish" Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces following attacks that killed two US service members in Jordan.

Iranian officials have also issued fresh warnings as the conflict continues.
