NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Sports commentator Stephen A Smith is now openly walking back his past political stance, saying he regrets supporting Kamala Harris in a candid interview with Sage Steele that premiered April 1.

Asked directly about his vote, Smith didn’t hesitate to say "Yes" when asked if he regretted it, before adding a blunt admission: “I don’t know what the hell I was thinking.”

Explaining his earlier reasoning, he said, “I believed that she was the kind of person that you get to acquiesce and work across the aisle in order to get things done,” but emphasized that belief ultimately collapsed as events unfolded.

Smith went on to sharply criticize the Democratic Party, arguing that its response after losing power pushed him to completely reconsider his stance.

“And then when I saw how things were unfolding and how out in the clouds the Democratic Party was even after they lost it, I said, there is no hope,” he said.

His frustration escalated as he added, “I don’t know what the hell I was thinking by believing that y’all would get it because you still don’t get it. You really, really don’t.”

Smith also pointed to what he sees as a disconnect between political messaging and voter perception. “Trump, you bring up the indictments, you bring up his behavior and America still said he’s more normal than y’all,” he said.

“And you still don’t get it. And I thought you’d get it, but you didn’t get it. So I lost all faith,” Smith added.

From rejecting Kamala Harris to defending Trump

Smith’s remarks come just days after he made headlines for defending President Donald Trump over his Iran decision during an appearance on 'Real Time with Bill Maher'.

In that segment, he argued critics were being inconsistent.

“Practically every president before him complained about Iran and how Iran needed to be dealt with,” Smith said, before adding, “But then all of a sudden Trump does it, and it’s a big problem. It doesn’t really make sense. It’s a lack of consistency.”

He sharpened that point further with a direct jab, saying, “You got a lot of damn nerves to be in the face of the American people saying for numerous administrations, Iran is a problem and then this man deals with them, and now you’re complaining.”

Taken together, Smith’s recent comments signal a broader political shift, from once backing Harris to now openly criticizing her party, while also calling out what he sees as contradictions in Trump’s opposition.
