MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: In a lively return to 'The Late Show', Stephen Colbert dedicated a significant portion of his Monday night monologue to discussing the major news that occurred during his absence: the felony conviction of Donald Trump.

The talk show host, known for his sharp wit and political commentary, reveled in the opportunity to delve into the details of the conviction, which declared Trump guilty of 34 counts of fraud related to hush money payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election. Colbert's monologue was filled with humorous jabs at Trump, including the unveiling of a Trump-sentencing Advent Calendar, which, upon opening, revealed a bottle of whisky. The host also poked fun at Trump's claims of persecution, with the former president stating, "If it can happen to me, it can happen to you." Colbert humorously responded, "Just think about that. If it could happen to him, it could happen to anyone who commits crimes, no matter who they are."

The comedian further mocked Trump's assertion that he never said "Lock her up" in reference to Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign, contrasting this with a compilation of clips showing Trump using those words. Colbert's playful retort, "The people said, 'lock her up?' That was your whole campaign. Stop it. We remember, we were there," highlighted the irony of Trump's statement.

The climax of the segment came when Colbert, discussing Trump's comments about the potential public reaction to his imprisonment or house arrest, turned to his in-studio audience for their opinion. “It would be tough for the public? Actually, I happen to have a large number of the public here. Hey public, what do you all think of Trump going to jail?” Colbert asked his audience, to which they responded with loud chants of “lock him up.”

The audience responded with enthusiastic chants of "lock him up," a moment that resonated with the public sentiment towards Trump's conviction. "There you have it. I didn't say, lock him up. The people said, lock him up," quipped Colbert.

Netizens react to Stephen Colbert's monologue

A user commented, "34 out of 34! You know this is probably the first time Donald Trump got 100% on anything!"

Another said, "I like the recurrent references to him as "Convicted Felon Donald Trump." I think that's the proper way to address him from now on."

One added, "Every time someone chants "Lock him up" a Patriotic angel gets their wings."

"Lock him up! And take Jordan and MTG with him. They're embarrassments to our country," read a comment.

"Dear Trump. As a member of the public, I'm fine with you finally being held accountable for your actions. Though I doubt that you will?" said a user.

"Can we have a big block party in NYC with Stephen Colbert on sentencing day?!" mocked another.

"Gone for what seems like forever. Yet no one has mentioned what is happening to Dr. Fauci. MTG is being trashy again. Justice is working for a change. Shocking," chimed a user.

"If they can do this to me, they can do this to anyone." Looks like Dingus Con finally figured out the meaning of 'justice is blind.' FDJT!" stated another user.
