NEW YORK: On 'The Late Show', Stephen Colbert delivered a scathing critique of Donald Trump’s choice of Sen JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate, taking a particularly brutal jab by invoking Melania Trump.

With Vance struggling to make a positive impression and making headlines for awkward moments like his ill-received joke about “racist” Diet Mountain Dew, Colbert couldn’t resist highlighting the former first lady’s endorsement of Vance.

Stephen Colbert mocks JD Vance’s campaign failures

Stephen Colbert seized on these missteps, quipping, “You sound like a groom who invited only coworkers to his bachelor party,” to underscore the awkwardness of JD Vance’s campaign appearances.

Turning his critique to Trump’s rationale behind Vance’s selection, Colbert played a clip from Fox News where Trump offered a “very Trump answer” about his running mate. “He liked me maybe more than anybody liked me,” the former president said.

Stephen Colbert delivers final blow with Melania Trump’s endorsement

Stephen Colbert responded with disbelief, asking, “Really? Vance likes Trump more than anybody else? Is that true?” He then aired a clip of Melania Trump, who, in response to the question, simply said, “Yes, of course.”

Colbert concluded, “Makes sense. That’s verified,” using Melania’s endorsement to deliver a final, biting jab at Trump’s VP choice.

Netizens react to Stephen Colbert’s jabs at JD Vance’s loyalty

Social media has been abuzz with reactions to Stephen Colbert’s recent satirical take on Donald Trump’s VP pick, Sen JD Vance.

A social media user commented, "Vance is just like Trump, so he knew how to pander to Trump's ego. A con man conning a con man."

A second said, "Mr Stephen leave Melania out of this leave her alone."

A third claimed, "I think one of the main reasons Trump chose Vance was because JD openly criticized Mike Pence's decision to follow the law rather than toeing The Donald's line, on January 6, 2021. Vance proudly stated that he'd never do that; he'd do anything to cater to Trump's "needs"! That's what a cult leader likes...a blind follower who would give up his life (and everybody else's) for his hero!"

"MAGA tears 😭" commented an individual.

"Trump the perpetual narcissist: His VP pick was based on his devotion to Trump vs other “boring “ things like competency to lead, respect for the rule of law, ethics, etc," read a comment.
