LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Stephen Colbert has reacted with surprise to President Joe Biden's unexpected decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

However, according to the late-night host, Biden's choice actually makes a lot of sense for future considerations.

Stephen Colbert praises Joe Biden’s decision to step back from 2024 race

On July 21, Joe Biden, announced that he is ending his reelection campaign amid growing calls within the Democratic Party and across the political aisle for his stepping down.

After stepping back from the race, Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

"I mean, this is shocking, but it makes sense! It’ll give him time to rest up for 2028," Colbert quipped on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'.

“And I for one want to salute this good man for the selfless act of stepping aside from being the most powerful person in the world, for the greater good," he said.

In a slightly more serious tone — though still with his trademark humor — Colbert praised Biden's decision, suggesting it aligns him with history's most altruistic leaders.

“I believe that this act puts Joe Biden in the league with history’s most selfless leaders: the Roman general Cincinnatus, the father of our country, George Washington, and Kim Cattrall, who has stepped down as Samantha after Pelosi showed her the polls,” he added.

Colbert also couldn't resist highlighting the coincidence that Biden's announcement of dropping out happened on National Ice Cream Day, yet another occasion tying the President to his beloved frozen treat.

Stephen Colbert embraces hope as Kamala Harris' potential campaign sparks optimism

Looking ahead to Kamala Harris' potential campaign, Stephen Colbert admitted feeling bewildered by the return of optimism.

"What is this? What is this strange feeling? It’s like my blood is flowing again," he exclaimed.

"For the first time in months, I don’t want to build a little pillow fort and crawl in there with a hoagie and a tub of frosting. Is this — is this excitement? Is this hope? Is there any way to physically embody this feeling?"

The answer came in the form of a video clip showing Harris dancing with children at an event, prompting Colbert to join in with his own dance moves.

"This is the dance of a man who finally has something new to talk about after five years," he remarked gleefully.
