WEST BLOOMFIELD, MICHIGAN: A man suspected of carrying out a vehicle attack at a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan has died after the dramatic incident that left a security guard injured, according to authorities.

The event unfolded at Temple Israel synagogue, one of the largest Jewish congregations in the Detroit suburbs.

Investigators say the suspect drove a vehicle directly into the synagogue building before proceeding down a hallway inside the complex. Officials later confirmed that the suspect is deceased, though authorities have not yet publicly stated how that came to be.

Michael Bouchard, sheriff of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, provided an update on the incident, describing how the vehicle entered the building and struck a security guard.

According to Bouchard, the car smashed through the synagogue’s doors and continued moving through the interior hallway.

“The vehicle was travelling with purpose down the hall of the building,” the sheriff said.

During the incident, a security guard was hit and briefly knocked unconscious.

Authorities say another guard confronted the suspect and exchanged gunfire with him. The suspect’s vehicle later caught fire inside the building.

Officials confirmed that aside from the injured guard, no other people inside the synagogue were harmed.
