WASHINGTON, DC: Governor Phil Murphy's (D-N.J.) wife, Tammy Murphy, concluded her primary campaign for the Senate on Sunday, March 24. With the announcement, Rep Andy Kim is the only significant contender left in the contest to succeed Sen Bob Menendez, ending a much-awaited Senate bid that began with great anticipation, according to The Hill.

Murphy stated in a video, "After many busy, invigorating and yes, challenging months, I am suspending my Senate campaign today. I’ve been genuine and factual throughout. But it is clear to me that continuing in this race will involve waging a very divisive and negative campaign, which I am not willing to do."

Tammy Murphy quits from New Jersey Senate primary

Despite strong support from powerful county party leaders and a plethora of high-ranking endorsements from most of the state's congressional delegation, Murphy found it difficult to get over doubts about her credentials and connections to the governor's office.

Murphy reportedly decided on Saturday, March 23, according to the New Jersey Globe, citing a challenging route to success that would necessitate substantial campaign self-funding.

Over the past two months, Kim has gained ground and upset Murphy in local county polls. As late as last week, state politicians were touting Murphy's endorsement lead and Kim's enthusiastic supporter base as reasons to believe the campaign was a toss-up.

Notably, Murphy's resignation raises doubts about her county endorsement lines. The decision to provide Kim the coveted endorsement ballot line will be made by each county party that has backed Murphy.

Moreover, Kim, contending that the unusual practice of endorsement ballot lines is undemocratic and permits party leadership to unjustly favor certain candidates over others, is suing the state over the matter. The state declared last week that it will not fight the lawsuit.

Furthermore, Murphy had an edge over Kim in the primary since she had endorsement lines in some of the most populated counties in the state; but, if Kim's lawsuit is successful, the advantage would vanish.

She said, "With Donald Trump on the ballot and so much at stake for our nation, I will not in good conscience waste resources tearing down a fellow Democrat instead of talking about process and politics."

She further added, "New Jersey’s next senator must focus on the issues of our time and not be mired in tearing others down while dividing the people of our party and state."

Murphy focuses on assisting Biden campaign

Murphy stated that she will now be concentrating on supporting the Biden campaign. She said, "And as we face grave, dangerous threats on the national level thanks to Donald Trump and far-right extremists, it’s time to unify, not divide."

She added, "I will now focus entirely on reelecting President Biden, and ensuring Democratic victories up and down the ballot all across New Jersey."

Notably, Menendez hinted last week that he would run as an independent in the general election, but he is not taking part in the primary since he is facing criminal corruption allegations.
