Ten horrific murder homes that were demolished
Many gut-wrenching murders have taken place in the US over the years. Some of them happened inside homes, usually believed to be the safest place. One of the most recent killings that shocked the whole nation as well as the world was the nighttime slayings of four University of Idaho students in November 2022. The youngsters were stabbed to death when they were sleeping inside their off-campus house.
Below is the list of ten houses that witnessed murders and were eventually taken down.
Idaho students murder house in Moscow
In late December 2023, the house where Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin were killed in their sleep in November 2022 was demolished. Though not all the victims’ families were in favor of the demolition since they wanted it to be there until the conviction of accused Bryan Kohberger, authorities found it best to raze it in everyone’s interest.
University spokesperson Jodi Walker reportedly said, “That is an area that is dense with students, and many students have to look at it and live with it every day and have expressed to us how much it will help with the healing process to have that house removed.”
Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment
Jeffrey Dahmer was responsible for taking the lives of 17 males between 1978 and 1991. The serial murderer not only killed his victims inside his apartment at the 900 block of North 25th Street Street, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but also decapitated their bodies and stored them in the refrigerator. The house was finally torn down in 1992.
Anthony Edward Sowell’s house
Anthony Edward Sowell, also known as ‘The Cleveland Strangler’, killed eleven women between 2007 and 2009. He kept their remains at his house in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2011, the residence was demolished and a letter was issued to the victims’ families by the city authorities that read, “In order to prevent actions that would be disrespectful to the memory of your loved one, your family, and our community; the demolition will be performed in such a way that no piece of the property will remain.”
Charles Manson killings at actress Sharon Tate’s rented house
The late actress Sharon Tate was living in a rented house at 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles, California when she was murdered by the followers of a cult led by Charles Manson on August 9, 1969. The killers also did not spare Tate’s unborn baby and her pals — Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent. The horror housse was taken down in 1994.
Ted Bundy's rooming house in Utah
One of the most dangerous serial killers in American history was Ted Bundy, who confessed to killing 30 young women and girls between 1974 and 1978. During those times, he reportedly used to live in a rooming house in Emigration Canyon, Utah, which has now been demolished.
John Wayne Gacy’s house
John Wayne Gacy was responsible for killing at least 33 young males in Cook County, Illinois, between 1972 and 1976. He took the lives of his victims at his house at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue in Chicago. The notorious house was torn down in April 1979.
Sandy Hook Elementary School
The massacre of Sandy Hook Elementary School happened on December 14, 2012, in which 20 children and six adults lost their lives. The school was situated in Newtown, Connecticut. Eventually, it was demolished and a new school was constructed.
Ariel Castro’s house
Ariel Castro kidnapped and kept Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus inside a house in Cleveland, Ohio, for nearly a decade. The late criminal even impregnated one of his victims. However, in 2013, the women escaped and Castro was eventually arrested. Later, the house of horror was taken down.
JonBenet Ramsey’s house
JonBenet Ramsey was found dead inside her house in Boulder, Colorado, in December 1996. Though her killer is yet to be found and sentenced, her house has been listed for around $7 million and referred to as “7240 square feet of elegant living areas.”
Alex Murdaugh family estate
In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife Margaret and son Paul at their 1,700-acre hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina. Though the property was not torn down, it sold for $3.9 million in 2023.
