FORT MYERS, FLORIDA: A frightening airline mix-up left six-year-old Casper stranded and alone in the wrong city, remininding many of the classic holiday film 'Home Alone'.

Spirit Airlines has launched an internal investigation into how the unaccompanied minor was incorrectly boarded onto a flight to Orlando instead of his intended destination of Fort Myers where his grandmother was waiting to collect him, as reported by Daily Mail.

Casper's grandmother panicked after realizing he took the wrong flight

Maria Ramos was full of excitement and anticipation while waiting at Fort Myers airport on December 21st to welcome her grandson Casper on his very first plane journey. That anticipation quickly turned to dismay and then outright panic when she was informed the child was not on the flight from Philadelphia as scheduled.

“They told me, ‘No, he’s not on this flight. He missed his flight.’ I said, ‘No, he could not miss his flight because I have the check-in tag,’” a distressed Ramos told local station WINK News.

Ramos frantically searched the plane and questioned airline staff to locate her grandson. “I ran inside the plane to the flight attendant, and I asked her, ‘Where’s my grandson? He was handed over to you at Philadelphia?’ She said, ‘No, I had no kids with me,’” the grandmother recalled.

It was then that young Casper himself called to inform his grandmother that he had in fact landed in Orlando – over 150 miles away from where she was waiting for him at Fort Myers airport. Even more bafflingly, his luggage had made it onto the correct Fort Myers flight.

Spirit Airlines releases statement acknowledging alarming boarding error

After several agonizing hours not knowing her grandson’s whereabouts, Ramos finally collected Casper from Orlando airport and began the long journey back to their home. She is now demanding answers from Spirit Airlines as to how this alarming mistake occurred.

Spirit released the following statement acknowledging responsibility for the situation: “On December 21, an unaccompanied child traveling from Philadelphia (PHL) to Fort Myers (RSW) was incorrectly boarded on a flight to Orlando (MCO). The child was always under the care and supervision of a Spirit Team Member, and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family.”

The airline confirmed it will pay for Ramos’ gas costs to collect Casper but has not provided further details on how the boarding mix-up happened or what steps staff took once discovering him alone heading to the wrong airport.

Internet draws comparisons to 'Home Alone 2'

The perplexing mishap quickly became fodder for online parallels to 'Home Alone 2.' Social media erupted with users drawing uncanny comparisons to the iconic movie.

"So basically Home Alone 2," one user remarked. "The McAllisters will never learn," another quipped.

"Home Alone Based On A True Story," a third user humorously commented. "This is basically home alone 2," echoed another.

"Isn’t this the plot to Home Alone?" pondered a fifth user. "Home Alone remake," succinctly summarized a sixth user.
