WASHINGTON, DC: Former Attorney General Bill Barr lashed out at ex-president Donald Trump's call to Congress to kill the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), labeling it "crazy and reckless," The Hill reported.

Shortly before the House GOP conference to discuss the bill, Trump took to his Truth Social writing, "KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHERS. THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!!!"

The Republican-controlled House blocked the legislation later on Wednesday, April 10, by 193-228, with 19 GOP lawmakers voting no. Section 702 of FISA will expire on April 19.

Bill Barr slams Donald Trump

"I think it's crazy and reckless to not move forward with FISA. It's our principal tool protecting us from terrorist attacks. We're living through a time where those threats have never been higher, so it's blinding us, it's blinding our allies," Barr said, denouncing Trump's call to thwart the bill in an interview with The Hill.

"I think President Trump's opposition seems to have stemmed from personal pique rather than any logic and reason. The provision that he objects to has nothing to do with the provision that's on the floor," he said about the now stalled legislation to renew Section 702 of FISA.

Barr, who was part of Trump Cabinet from 2019 to 2020, also argued that the former president's claims of the legislation being used against him were incorrect as the wiretap of Trump's former campaign adviser, Carter Page, during the 2020 election was not related to Section 702.

According to him, Section 702, which "was abused during Russia-gate had to do with getting wiretaps for American citizens, and that's not what's being considered. This is our ability to exploit foreign communications, and there are no Fourth Amendment issues with respect to the collection of this information."

He further noted that the GOP presumptive nominee once backed the expansion of surveillance authority but changed his stance after having talks with others, and his anger after the left's attack on him over Russia-gate ended his willingness to support the reauthorization.

Barr raised caution that the expiration of the intelligence community's surveillance authority and a terrorist attack on the US would lead to "blood on people's hands."

Internet blasts Bill Barr

Barr faced online backlash for criticizing Trump's call to kill the legislation to reauthorize FISA.

One user wrote, "The swamp has spoken!" And another remarked, "The corrupt Barr .. shocking."

"If Bill Barr is mad, be happy Americans. He is as corrupt as they come," a third user added. Meanwhile, a fourth response read, "Sit down Barr. We are done with you."

Someone else said, "Barr is full of crap. why didn't he stop trump when he had the chance." An individual argued, "Let him rage, he’s a major disappointment anyway."

"It’s his own fault, he was the top cop and did nothing. He’s a disgrace," a remark read, and one person wrote, "Bill Barr needs to hush his mouthpiece! Where were you at when you could've stopped ALL this BS!? Oh yeah in the deep states pockets! Sit down."
