'The View' co-hosts criticize Sunny Hostin for linking climate change to solar eclipse and earthquake
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Sunny Hostin received strong criticism from her co-hosts on 'The View' for suggesting a link between climate change and recent natural occurrences like the solar eclipse, a recent earthquake in New York City, and the upcoming cicada emergence.
In a lively discussion during the April 8 episode, the co-hosts explored the scientific explanations behind the total solar eclipse, which fascinated millions across America.
Hostin links celestial events to climate change, Behar disagrees
Hostin, aged 55, began the discussion by suggesting that these events— including the rare celestial phenomenon, the earthquake, and the forthcoming surge of cicadas— might be indicative of climate change.
"We have a solar eclipse. We have the earthquake," Hostin said, adding, "All those factors together might lead one to believe that either climate change exists or something significant is happening."
Co-host Joy Behar countered her claims, saying, "Except earthquakes are not at the mercy of climate change. It's underground. It can't."
The discussion commenced with Alyssa Farah Griffin, 'The View' co-host and former White House communications director, humorously addressing the "apocalypse" theories circulating regarding the rare celestial event, lightening the mood.
"So, what's kind of crazy is with the earthquake on Friday and then the eclipse today, people are having all sorts of conspiracies about the end of the world," she said.
Expanding on her statement, she added, "And then I read online that the earthquake epicenter was actually at Bedminster in New Jersey. Fun fact - it originated with Trump."
Debate over pronunciation, climate change and natural phenomena
Sunny Hostin joined the discussion but stumbled over the pronunciation of "cicadas," leading co-host Whoopi Goldberg to offer assistance and correct her pronunciation.
"I learned that the cicadas are coming," Hostin remarked, pronouncing the word as "sick-ah-duhs," with Goldberg repeating and emphasizing, "Cicadas," with the pronunciation "sick-cay-duhs."
"It's the first time in like a hundred years," Hostin persisted, seeking to support her point, but Goldberg interjected firmly, "No, no, no. There are two different kinds of cicadas. It happens every 17 years."
Undeterred by her co-hosts, Hostin pressed on, stating, "All those things together would perhaps lead one to believe that either climate change exists, or something significant is happening."
"Or Jesus is returning," Farah Griffin quipped, injecting humor into the conversation, followed by Behar making a clear distinction between the earthquake and climate change.
Behar pointed out that the earthquake couldn't be attributed to climate change as it occurred underground.
"How about the warming of the planet?" Hostin countered.
"No, it happens," Goldberg clarified. "And the eclipse, they've known about the eclipse coming because eclipses happen, and they actually can say when these things are going to happen."
Netizens hilariously troll Hostin for her eclipse comment
Social media was inundated with criticism, as many condemned Hostin for her remarks and accused her of disseminating misinformation and promoting divisive rhetoric.
One person noted, "Doesnt know what time of day or day of week it is." [sic]
Another user sarcastically tweeted, "This is a Harvard graduate."
"She’s sounding exactly like a republiQan," a viewer observed. [sic]
"Just the latest in a long line of stupid remarks. Why is she on this or any other show?" said another viewer.
