'The View' hosts offer their hot takes after Elmo's mental health check triggers huge online trauma dump
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The January 30 episode of 'The View' had co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Fowler talk about mental health check-ins with loved ones, after beloved 'Sesame Street' resident Elmo opened a floodgate of people dumping their traumas on X with a single tweet.
"Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” posted the official account of the character on January 29, which led to thousands sharing that they are, in fact, not doing well.

Whoopi Goldberg feels everyone should follow Elmo's lead
After introducing the subject around the Hot Topics table, Goldberg said that the responses to Elmo's initial tweet were heavy with "anxiety, grief, and despair, everything that people are struggling with, so much so that 'Sesame Street' ended up posting mental health resources so folks can reach out."
"People are going through stuff," she observed. "They're just going through stuff. Maybe we need to follow Elmo's lead, and when we ask each other how we're doing, actually pay attention to what the answer is."
Behar quipped in with a joke, "Maybe Miss Piggy should have an advice column," which drew some laughs, but the mood remained somber.
“If the adults are going through all of these kinds of trauma, the kids must be having a hell of a time as well,” continued Goldberg, suggesting Sesame Street to include a page for kids to share their problems as well.
Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines had similar takes
Hostin agreed with Goldberg about children having their fair share of troubles. She noted that the present teenagers are not as social as the previous generations, raising two of them herself. they have missed major milestones in their lives as a result of the pandemic, and are more reliant on social media for contact with their peers.
The responses to Elmo's tweet were a good reminder for all to remain honest about their mental state, felt Haines.
"All jokes aside, that’s the important reminder here, is that when you say ‘How are you,’ mean it when you ask,” she said. “And when someone asks you, pause. It doesn’t mean you’re sharing your soul with everyone you cross, but that pause is the gift and the difference between a reaction versus a response.”
