DETROIT, MICHIGAN: A Michigan caregiver was slapped with several charges after a disturbing video of her abusing an elderly dementia patient was discovered by authorities, as per Fox News.

Dontia Shawnra Arrington, 26, who worked at Landings of Genesee Valley, was charged with vulnerable adult abuse, torture with the intent to cause cruel or extreme physical or mental pain and suffering, and assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation.

Dontia Shawnra Arrington smacked the victim with a soiled diaper

During a press conference, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said, "You see the vulnerability of the victim and the fact that she’s getting hit with a 2- or 3-pound soiled diaper. But that isn’t enough. When she brought her hand across her throat in a chokehold, that can kill people, especially a 93-year-old," as reported by WNEM-TV

He added, "This is severe dementia. The victim has no idea what’s going on. She can’t process what we process on a regular basis."

The incident from April 4 was captured by a nanny cam installed by the victim's relatives inside the facility.

Swanson said the elder abuse task force was notified, and investigators were able to piece together the case based on what they saw in the video.

Talking about the video, Genesee County Prosecutor David Layton noted, "I was appalled. I was disgusted and I was very angry. And I said to Chief Assistant [Genesee County Prosecutor Tamara] Phillips, 'We’re gonna have to charge this woman as harshly as we can.'"

Kathy, the victim's daughter, shared that she and her family noticed her mother's bruises back in December, and staff at Landings claimed that they were caused by her hitting her arm.

However, they were skeptical about the response and decided to put a nanny cam in her room, eventually discovering the horrific treatment that the victim had to endure.

Kathy noted her mother, who has been moved to a different assisted living facility, is getting better but remains fearful and traumatized from the incident.

Arrington, whose bond was set at $45,000, faces up to life in prison if convicted on all of the charges. She is slated to appear in court on April 24 for a probable cause conference.

Internet reacts to the gut-wrenching incident

A Facebook user wrote, "One day she will be old, and karma will be there," and another said, "This is inhumane."

A person declared, "Get rid of her should not have that job," and someone else expressed, "I hope she is jailed and her welfare taken off her!"

"Prayers for her family and friends! So heartbreaking," shared an individual. One more noted, "This is so heart-wrenching, she should be behind bars."
