WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Joe Biden briefly interrupted former first lady Jill Biden’s book event to promote his own upcoming memoir, creating an awkward moment that resurfaced after newly released video showed him continuing to speak even as music began playing to signal the event’s end.
The footage, released by 92NY on Thursday, July 16, captured the interaction during Jill Biden’s June 2 appearance at the 92nd Street Y in New York, where she was promoting her memoir, 'View from the East Wing: A Memoir'. The clip especially gained attention after Axios reporter Alex Thompson shared it on X (formerly Twitter).
Joe Biden interrupts Jill Biden's book event to promote his own book
The video shows Joe Biden rising from the audience and walking toward the stage while attendees applauded. Jill Biden, who was joined onstage by 'The View ' co-host Whoopi Goldberg, joked about the interruption.
"Oh, Joe has a question," Jill said, drawing laughter from the audience. "Like you couldn't ask it later?"
Standing near the stage, the former president asked, "Who do you love most in the whole world?"
"Whoopi," Jill replied jokingly before clarifying, "I love you most, Joe. Is that the answer you wanted?"
As Goldberg wrapped up the event, music began playing over the venue's speakers, signaling the program had ended. However, Biden gestured that he wanted to speak, accepted a microphone, and addressed the audience.
"My book, which comes out in September, read it," he said, prompting Jill to quip, "I have to remind him, this is my event!"
Before leaving the stage, Biden added, "The only thing Jill does better than write is she's a beautiful woman," before handing back the microphone and exiting.
Video resurfaces months after event
Although the New York Post first reported on the incident in early June, video footage of the exchange was not made public until Thursday.
The clip was shared by Axios' Alex Thompson, who co-authored the 2025 book 'Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again' with CNN's Jake Tapper.
The resurfaced footage quickly circulated online, with many viewers describing the exchange as awkward because Biden continued speaking even as music played to end the event.
Jill's memoir, 'View from the East Wing: A Memoir', which came out in June, was the focus of the event, while Biden's upcoming book, 'Promise Me, America', is scheduled for release in November.
