WASHINGTON, DC: A group of over two dozen House Democrats have recently created a new task force dedicated to border security, in light of the upcoming 2024 general election.

Co-chaired by Representatives Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY), the task force is focused on “countering the surge of illicit narcotics threatening communities across the country and addressing the influx of irregular migration at the southern border,” per a statement from Rep Cuellar’s office.

What did House Democrats address in their border security task force briefings?

In recent weeks, there has been a steady surge in pressure from moderate Democrats on President Joe Biden to reach a deal with Republicans regarding border security measures, according to The Hill.

This comes after House Republicans rejected a bipartisan bill that had previously passed in the Senate last month.

“Cities across the country are now feeling the consequences of the humanitarian crisis at the border — something border communities have been dealing with for years,” Rep Cuellar stated.

He continued, “This crisis is unsustainable, and Democrats need a forum to approach border security policy as the GOP continues to play partisan politics with the issue.”

The issue of border security has caused a stalemate in the House of Representatives, as Republicans have demanded significant changes to current policy, which most Democrats have refused to entertain.

Republicans argue that the reforms proposed by Democrats do not go far enough, leading to a legislative impasse, including government funding measures.

Public opinion polls indicate that the border is consistently one of the most pressing issues for voters in 2024.

In a recent special election on Long Island, Rep Suozzi won on a campaign that emphasized border issues and called for reform but stopped short of criticizing the Commander-in-Chief outright.

Cuellar, a moderate member of the House Democratic Caucus, has been one of the most vocal critics of the president's policies on the border.

On Tuesday, March 12, he and 13 other Democrats voted for a Republican-led measure that criticized President Biden over the border and urged him to use expanded executive authority to control immigration.

According to Cuellar's office, the task force will serve as a platform for Democrats to discuss and engage in matters related to border security, and the group will hold meetings with the Biden administration and stakeholders and collaborate to develop policies.

Internet mocked House Democrats’ efforts to reestablish control at the border

People on X appeared unimpressed with the attempt by House Democrats to create a border security task force that would cooperate with the White House and House Republicans more effectively to avoid a standstill on this raging crisis.

One X user remarked: “lol! Those lying clowns!"

Another user claimed: "Funny how something that has been a problem for 3 years suddenly gets their attention. If they win, this task force will be disbanded immediately."

Another user asked: "Where have they been? It’s obvious this is a last-ditch effort to try to convince voters that they recognize the danger uncontrolled immigration poses for the country (something they likely caused)."

One user said: "Only cuz it's election year and immigration is in the top 2 slots for importance to voters."

Another X user quipped: "To do what? Make money with the cartels by expanding the invasion?"

Finally, this user tweeted: "That is totally laughable and completely useless!"
