WASHINGTON, DC: Representing the 3rd congressional district of Long Island and Queens, Democrat Tom Suozzi was sworn in as a congressman once more on Wednesday, February 28.

Suozzi brought his cheering section from home to Congress. As he was calling for a new age of unity and working across the aisle, around 100 Long Islanders were chanted his name.

Suozzi has taken the oath of office twice to become a representative, but this was presumably the first time he had approached members of Congress sternly, telling them to put aside their dysfunction and, in his words, "wake up."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries gave Suozzi a hearty hug, undoubtedly hopeful that Suozzi won't be the only New York Democrat to turn red seat to blue.

Suozzi's win in the most recent special election reduces the already narrow majority held by House Republicans. In New York, Republicans currently possess 10 seats, while Democrats currently hold 16. Nonetheless, Democratic leaders predict that the recently created congressional maps would result in 18 safe seats for their party, six for the Republicans, and two undecided.

Al Sharpton and his National Action Network held its first annual in person conference in two years due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The conference brings together civil rights leaders and allies, government officials, and other leaders from around the country to discuss voting rights, police reform and public safety. Suozzi said, "While I might be the only one being sworn in today, what if we all see this as a fresh start? What if we all took this chance to break some of our bad habits? What if today we remembered why we ran for office in the first place? Let's get back into the solutions business."

Suozzi did not bring up the contentious special election involving Mazi Pillip or the former Congressman George Santos he had replaced, even as he posed for official photos with House Speaker Mike Johnson.

He did, however, address the issues that his people and all Americans faced.

"People are worried about the cost of living. They're worried about the chaos at the border. They're worried about Israel, Gaza, and Ukraine. They look to Congress, and what do they see? The extremists get all the attention. We're letting ourselves be bullied by our base. We aren't getting anything done," he said.

Suozzi urged all parties to set aside politics in order to address the issue of the immigration crisis, which is not limited to New York but is affecting the entire nation.

"I know compromise is hard in this town, Mr. Speaker, but bring a bipartisan compromise to the floor and I guarantee it will pass," he added.

Internet celebrates as Tom Suozzi gets sworn back
