WASHINGTON, DC: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz didn’t hold back at the Human Rights Campaign’s annual national dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday, September 7. The governor took some sharp jabs at both Senator JD Vance and former president Donald Trump.

During his speech at the dinner, Walz brought up the difficulties that come with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and how crucial access to these treatments is. He didn’t mince words when it came to the GOP’s vice-presidential nominee JD Vance, saying he didn’t want any advice from the latter on the subject.

“It’s stressful,” Walz shared with the crowd, reflecting on the challenges he and his wife faced while trying to conceive. “It’s hard. I sure the hell don’t need JD Vance giving me advice on it. It’s not helpful. It’s not helpful.”

The Ohio Senator has been under fire lately, especially after reports surfaced that he backed a Heritage Foundation report calling for restrictions on both abortions and fertility treatments.

Furthermore, Vance’s controversial remarks about “childless cat ladies” also sparked a widespread backlash among Democrats, the New York Post reported.

Tim Walz avoids talking about Donald Trump's IVF proposal

While Tim Walz had plenty to say about JD Vance, he noticeably avoided mentioning Donald Trump’s recent proposal to expand access to IVF treatments. In a move that surprised some of his conservative supporters, the former president announced plans to make IVF treatments more accessible through insurance mandates and government funding.

Trump declared at a rally in Michigan: “Under the Trump administration, your government will pay for — or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for — all costs associated with IVF treatment.”

Walz faced quite a backlash from critics on social media for misrepresenting Trump's IVF stance.

"Walz conveniently leaves out the fact that Trump has actually proposed free IVF; another example of selective outrage. Instead of acknowledging that Trump’s plan could help millions of families, Walz focuses on cheap shots. It’s typical of politicians to twist the narrative to suit their agenda, but the facts speak for themselves. Trump has put forward real solutions, and the opposition is too focused on tearing him down to see it," said a social media user on X, formerly Twitter.

"Walz hasn’t had one moment of honesty since he entered the campaign. He’s just lies and deception 24/7," another wrote.

"Walz lied about his wife and lVF and about his military service and about his DUI and his wife’s racist tirade and about deleting the video of his wife’s racist tirade," a third user alleged.

"I dont believe Walz has the capacity to tell the truth ever, this guy is really disturbing," someone else chimed in.

"Just one question: why did she pick him? I don't get it," read a comment.

"Picking him over Shapiro may be Kamala's biggest f**k up," another offered.

Tim Walz underscores LGBTQ+ rights and equal justice

Tim Walz also used his platform at the HRC dinner to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, stressing the importance of letting people marry whoever they love.

“My marriage to my wife Gwen is the most important thing in my life. I love her deeply. Why would I stop anybody else from marrying the person they love?” he said. “That makes no sense.”

He added, “It’s a fact of life some people are gay. But you know what’s not a fact of life? That our children need to be shot dead in schools."

Walz sang praises of Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for their efforts in protecting LGBTQ+ rights through executive orders.

“And the reason she did it was pretty simple. Kamala Harris believes in equal justice under law, and that means proper, complicated, equal justice under law. It is not to be debated,” he noted. “It’s not that difficult.”

Walz is seen as an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Under his leadership, Minnesota has passed laws that protect access to gender-affirming health care and abortion, while also banning conversion therapy, the Associated Press reported.
