SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's wife, Gwen Walz, once admitted that she intentionally left the windows of the governor's residence "open as long as [she] could" to smell the smoke coming from burning tires in the aftermath of the 2020 riots that took place after George Floyd's death.

Her remark comes to the forefront as her husband's handling of the intense Black Lives Matter protests in the Twin Cities has been under scrutiny since he was named Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate for the 2024 election, as per the New York Post

What did Gwen Walz say about the 2020 George Floyd protests?

Gwen Walz talked about her husband Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's struggle to deal with the public uproar following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25, 2020, in an interview with KSTP in June of that year.

"I could smell the burning tires, and that was a very real thing," remarked Gwen Walz regarding the BLM protests that swept through Minneapolis and beyond, including the vicinity of the governor's residence in St Paul.

She added, "I kept the windows open as long as I could because I felt like that was such a touchstone of what was happening."

The strain of their home state becoming a focal point for the national conversation about racism and police brutality was worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, Gwen mentioned.

The governor experienced lots of "sleepless nights" during that period, according to the veteran educator.

Governor Walz, 60, was criticized by the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate’s Joint Transportation and Judiciary and Public Safety Committee for downplaying the riots, delaying the deployment of the National Guard, and failing to coordinate with the police.

He also faced allegations of allowing his then-19-year-old daughter, Hope Walz, to access confidential law enforcement information, which she then attempted to share with protesters.

On May 28, 2020, Hope took to X (formerly Twitter) to write, "Could someone who actually has followers rely [sic] to the masses that have gotten ‘national guard’ trending that the guard WILL NOT be present tonight??"

She continued making several posts, mentioning that "the guard can not [sic] be sent in within minutes," and explaining that "it takes time for them to deploy because they come from all over the state."

On the same night that Hope shared the tweets, rioters overtook and set fire to the Minneapolis Police Department's Third Precinct police station.

Netizens derided Minnesota Gov Tim Walz’s wife, Gwen Walz, for admitting in the aftermath of the 2020 riots that she kept the windows of the governor’s residence "open as long as [she] could" to smell the burning tires.

"Maybe she told Tim not to send in the national guard," claimed a person, with someone else saying, "That is legitimately weird."

"Does people actually believe she was smelling rubber burning. Its toxic," pointed out an individual.

One more wrote, "Yeah, that's wild! Gwen must've been really calm during all that chaos."
