Tony Perkins says he is very concerned as he warns about ‘issue of life’ at America Reads Bible event
WASHINGTON, DC: As the historic week America Reads the Bible began on Saturday, April 18 bringing nearly 500 leaders from across the field, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins also addressed the gathering.
Joining the other participants of the event, Perkins said that the United States is at a “pivotal time.”
The event takes place during the United States’ 250th anniversary, in the nation’s capital, offering a timely moment of reflection on faith, leadership, and the enduring influence of Scripture in American life
Perkins says its ‘pivotal time’ for America to reconnect
Highlighting the need for a spiritual event for Americans, Perkins said that a weeklong event comes at a moment when Americans need to reconnect with Scripture, as he spoke with Fox News.
“People talk about the importance of the Bible… It’s one of the best-selling books, but one of the least-read books,” Perkins said. “This is a great time to rediscover the Word of God.”
Perkins also expressed his concern over the surge in the rate of ab***on as pointed to the debate over ab***on policy and ab***n rates following the widespread use of mail-order prescriptions for FDA-approved ab***on pills.
He also argued that current FDA policies surrounding ab***on drugs are undermining state-level protections. “I’m very concerned about where we are on the life issue,” he said.
Perkins talks about issue of life
Highlighting the significance of ab***on debate beyond politics, Perkins framed it as a broader moral question for the country. “This is not a political issue — this is a spiritual issue,” he said.
Describing the Declaration of Independence as a country's “birth certificate” and highlighting the right to life enshrined in it, Perkins said it was the right time to return to its founding principles, as the nation's future depends on this returning journey.
“If America wants a future past 250 years, we need to embrace what our birth certificate says — that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights,” Perkins said.
America Read the Bible event
The weeklong initiative features hundreds of participants reading the entire Bible, highlighted by a special scheduled reading from the Oval Office by President Donald Trump.
Opening the 'America Reads the Bible' event on Saturday, April 18, speaker of the House Mike Johnson declared that “God is not done with America yet” as he called for a national rededication to the country’s founding values.
He emphasized the unique role of religious conviction in the shaping of the US.
