WASHINGTON, DC: The Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue first-ever commemorative Social Security cards to millions of babies born during the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations, marking a one-time initiative tied to the nation's semiquincentennial.

The limited-edition cards will be available only to children born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026, and will feature the official Freedom 250 logo while functioning exactly like standard Social Security cards. The agency said parents will not have to complete any additional paperwork or pay any fees to receive the commemorative version.

The commemorative cards will be issued automatically through the SSA's longstanding Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers or through licensed midwives.

Only original Social Security cards issued during the qualifying six-month period will carry the Freedom 250 logo. Babies born or after the rollout period, as well as anyone requesting a replacement card, will receive the standard design.

SSA Commissioner Frank J Bisignano said the commemorative cards were intended to recognize both the nation's milestone anniversary and the agency's own history. "Freedom 250 is a celebration of America's storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago," Bisignano said.

He added, "the next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future."

The SSA said the commemorative design does not alter a child's Social Security number or the legal function of the card. The agency also confirmed the rollout would come at no additional cost to families or taxpayers.

Cards to be issued automatically as SSA warns families about scams

Parents will not need to register separately or request the commemorative version. The card will automatically be issued through the normal birth registration process used nationwide since the Enumeration at Birth program was introduced in 1987.

With more than 3.5 million children born in the United States each year, millions of families are expected to receive the commemorative cards during the six-month rollout. The SSA also warned parents to remain alert to potential scams seeking to exploit the announcement.

"SSA will never call, text, or email you requesting payment to obtain a commemorative card for your child or otherwise," the agency said. Officials emphasized that families should not provide payment or additional personal information beyond the standard birth registration process.

The commemorative card initiative comes alongside other Trump administration programs aimed at young Americans, including the rollout of Trump Accounts, tax-advantaged investment accounts designed to help eligible families begin saving for their children's futures.
