Trump admin tries to lure Eric Adams from NYC race to sink Zohran Mamdani, claim reports

WASHINGTON DC: New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) faces a critical decision: whether to continue his reelection campaign or accept a position in the Donald Trump administration.
Sources told Politico that Adams has been offered a role at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with Trump’s team in Florida earlier this week, but he has not confirmed whether he plans to leave the mayoral race.
“The mayor, who has a friendly working and political relationship with Trump, met with the president’s team during his visit Monday to Florida,” a source told Politico.

Adams confirmed to Fox 5 in NYC on the morning of September 3, “I met with some of his team. I met with several elected officials, and again, if there’s any changes in this race, I will announce that.”
Trump’s administration reportedly plans to “clear the field” for former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) by offering Adams a federal position. Republican Curtis Sliwa is also reportedly being considered for a role to reduce the chances of Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani winning the mayoral race, New York Times also reported.
According to insiders, the goal would be to give former Gov Cuomo a better chance of defeating Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, in November’s general election.
Trump praises Eric Adams despite party divide
While the Republican–Democrat pairing may seem unusual, Trump has spoken positively about Adams in the past. At a Madison Square Garden rally last year, Trump said Adams has been “really great” to him.
“He said that ‘They shouldn’t be calling Trump a dictator. Because it’s not true.’ That’s nice. That was nice. Very nice,” Trump said. “So we want to thank Mayor Adams.” Earlier this year, Adams had a “productive” conversation with Trump before the former president’s inauguration. Trump’s DOJ later moved to drop corruption charges against Adams, sparking accusations of a “quid pro quo,” including from the judge who dismissed the charges.

Mamdani has been eager to tie his rivals closely to Trump.
“Today’s news confirms it: Cuomo is Trump’s choice for mayor. The White House is considering jobs for Adams and Sliwa to clear the field,” the Democratic nominee for mayor posted on X soon after the news broke.
“New Yorkers are sick of corrupt politics and backroom deals. No matter who’s running, we will deliver a better future on November 4," he added.

Surveys suggest Andrew Cuomo could beat Mamdani 52% to 41% in a head-to-head matchup. Currently, Mamdani leads the five-person field with 42% support, according to Mediaite. The field also includes independent candidate Tricia Walden.
Internet reacts to political moves as smart strategy
Social media users were quick to comment on the situation.
One wrote on X, “This isn’t bad strategy, at all.” Another said, “That should go over well with New Yorkers.”
Other reactions included: “Trump’s team treats government like Monopoly… trade pieces, block rivals…” and “politics at its finest.”
