WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Friday, October 10, announced that he has decided to give the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead on September 10.

The ceremony is planned to take place on October 14, on Kirk’s 32nd birthday.

A month after prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s murder, Trump confirmed that the prestigious medal would be given to the slain activist posthumously.

Previously, while speaking during the 9/11 remembrance day at the Pentagon, Trump described Kirk as “a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” and added that “our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Erika, and his beautiful children.”

He told reporters the date of the award would be announced later and predicted it would draw “a very big crowd.”

On Friday, Trump, while announcing the decision, said, "Erika, his beautiful wife, is going to be here, and a lot of people are going to be here. I'm coming back, I believe it's Tuesday night for Charlie Kirk, a friend of mine, a friend of all of ours, a friend of a lot of the people right here."

"And we're giving him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest honor you get outside of the Congressional Medal of Honor. One's military, one's civilian, but it's the greatest honor," he said.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States. It is awarded by the president to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to security, national interests, world peace, culture, or other significant public or private endeavors.

Its relevance lies in symbolizing national recognition of extraordinary service or influence, making Trump’s decision to award it to Kirk both a powerful tribute and a politically charged statement.

Kirk was the co-founder and the public face of Turning Point USA, the conservative youth organization that became a major force on college campuses and in Republican politics.

He helped mobilize young voters for Trump’s 2024 campaign and built a large media presence through podcasts, books, and high-profile speaking events. He was shot dead during a public debate event at Utah Valley University last month.
