WARREN, MICHIGAN: GOP nominee Donald Trump repeated his long-debunked claim of being named Michigan's 'Man of the Year' decades ago when asked about his plans to keep jobs in the United States during a rally in Warren in September 2024.

In a clip that went viral on the social media platform X, a Trump-rally attendee asked the former president, "What actions will you take to ensure that our jobs stay in America so we can continue to build the best cars in the world here in Michigan?"

Trump was on the verge of sharing his proposal but almost immediately went off-track, stating, "Years ago, in this area, I was honored as the man of the year. Maybe 20 years ago. The fake news heard about it and said, it never happened... I didn't know who it was, it was a group that honored me."

In an incoherent rant that followed, Trump shared that all he knew was that the car industry was being taken away from Michigan, as much as he was sure of winning the award.

Donald Trump's claim stood long debunked

Multiple fact-checkers, including Newsweek and FactChecker.org, have stated that Donald Trump's claim was not backed by evidence.

According to FactChecker, the event Trump was possibly referring to was a 2013 dinner hosted by a county Republican Party organization, where he was presented with token gifts. However, no awards were conferred, as the group did not hand out any such awards.

Former GOP lawmaker Dave Trott, who was present at the scene, later stated that he did not want to correct Trump when he first made the claim in 2017 as it would have been embarrassing to him, reported Newsweek.

The publication also shared that Trump was ultimately awarded "Man of the Decade" by Michigan's Oakland County GOP in 2023, but that bore no relation to his original claim.

Internet trolls Donald Trump for repeating false claim

Netizens reacting to the viral clip on X mocked Donald Trump for his comments. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"Another open mic night at the nursing home," jibed a user.

"Always about him, him, him," wrote another.

"He has the storytelling ability of a toddler," jibed someone else.

"What in the world? Didn’t answer the question and sounded crazy," noted one.

"This is so completely bizarre that it's unfathomable how anyone could vote for this man to be in any public role," commented a user.
