Trump biographer blasts Melania's rare appearances: 'She is not the first lady'

Michael Wolff said Melania Trump had abandoned the traditional first lady role after making just 38 public appearances through July

WASHINGTON, DC: Melania Trump's unusually limited public schedule has drawn a sharp attack from presidential biographer Michael Wolff, who says the first lady has effectively walked away from the traditional expectations of the role.

The criticism came after Melania Trump returned to the White House Rose Garden on Thursday for an event tied to her 'Fostering the Future' initiative, her first public appearance in more than a month.

“I heard you missed me. Here I am,” she told those gathered.

Wolff argued that the remark carried a sharper message, describing it as more of a taunt than a joke and accusing Melania of “abdicating” the official first lady role.

Speaking on 'Inside Trump’s Head', Wolff said Melania had rejected the traditional expectation that a first lady maintain a visible public presence while supporting charitable and civic causes.

“She comes and goes as she pleases,” Wolff said, arguing that Melania no longer presents herself as the conventional White House spouse.

Wolff also criticized the nature of her latest appearance, questioning whether the event represented the type of public service traditionally associated with the position.

The White House did not immediately respond to the criticism.

Melania’s low profile has been documented in recent reporting.

A review found that she had appeared publicly on 38 days through July 31, compared with substantially more public appearances by previous first ladies during comparable periods.

Her limited schedule has included high-profile events and appearances connected to her own initiatives, while she has also remained involved in projects focused on children and technology.

The White House has promoted her work through 'Fostering the Future', including a June initiative designed to help young people in foster care build financial independence.

'Fostering the Future' expands nationally

Thursday’s Rose Garden appearance focused on a new expansion of the initiative.

IndyCar and Fox Corporation announced a $2 million donation to fund scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University.

The expansion brings the program’s network to 26 academic institutions, according to the White House.

Melania has also promoted the initiative through a broader technology and education program involving first spouses from other countries.

The latest criticism therefore comes as Melania maintains a deliberately selective public profile rather than disappearing entirely from White House work.

Her office continues to promote policy and charitable initiatives, even as her public appearances remain comparatively infrequent.

Wolff’s assessment is his own characterization of Melania’s role, not an official finding about the duties of the first lady.

The position has no single statutory job description requiring a set number of appearances or public engagements.
