WASHINGTON, DC: Former president Donald Trump claimed that God thinks he would "straighten out" the United States, which turned "sick" after the failed assassination attempt in July.

The GOP presidential nominee invoked God during a recent interview on 'Life, Liberty, and Levin' hosted by Fox News' Mark Levin.

The host asked whether Trump had turned more towards God after he survived an assassination attempt during his rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, as per Mediaite.

A gunman had fired shots at Trump while he addressed a rally crowd, with a bullet grazing his ear. One attendee was killed, and two others were injured. The shooter was also immediately neutralized by a Secret Service sniper.

Donald Trump asserts God wants him to return to the White House

"I think you think like, if you believe in God, you believe in God more. And somebody said like, why? And I'd like to think that God thinks that I'm going to straighten out our country," Trump said.

"Our country is so sick and it's so broken. Our country is just broken. And maybe that was the reason, I don't know. I don't know, a lot of people have said that," he added.

The MAGA leader also claimed that talking to shooting experts, including his sons, who said the bullet could not have missed the aim from that distance, made him believe more in the Almighty.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire with an AR-style rifle from the roof of a factory located 130 yards away from the podium where the 45th president addressed his supporters.

Trump recounted the moment, noting the gunman was in a hurry and people noticing him on the roof made him rush.

The former president had previously attributed his narrow escape from the likely fatal bullet to God. Speaking to reporters a day after the assassination attempt, he asserted that he was supposed to be dead.

"By luck or by God, many people are saying it's by God I'm still here," he had said.

Speaking to Levin, Trump then hailed the Secret Service agents who swarmed in to protect him at the time, calling them "very brave" and the sniper who took down the shooter "amazing", as per The Hill.

However, he pointed out that there should have been someone on the roof from where the shooter targeted him.

Internet slams Donald Trump for claiming God thinks he will 'straighten out' the country

Netizens called out Donald Trump, accusing him of pandering to religious voters by deeming him as the savior chosen by God to "straighten out" the United States.

"The idea that Trump sees himself as God’s chosen savior is not only presumptuous but borders on blasphemy. It’s absurd to think that divine intervention would come in the form of someone who’s done so much to divide the country rather than heal it," a user said.

"Obscene. It is clear that there is no bottom with him," another added.

"Pandering to religious people is horrible," said a third user.

"This is so gross. I don’t understand how any Christian can stomach this man," read a fourth response.

"One way people take God's name in vain is by using His name for their own benefit," someone else remarked.

"His hypocrisy knows no bounds," an individual claimed.

"You have done too many horrible things in your life at the expense of good people, without remorse. God is about introspection, caring and compassion for others of which you have none. You don’t go to church, so to think God thinks about you Donald is ludicrous," another user chimed in.

"Straight up delusion," read a comment.
