PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND: A mass shooting near Brown University on Saturday, December 14, left two people dead and at least nine others injured. President Donald Trump confirmed the deaths later in the day. He described the incident as “a terrible thing” and said that prayers were with the victims and their families.
The mayor of Providence initially said a suspect connected to the shooting had been detained. Trump later clarified on Truth Social that the suspect is still missing. Gunfire broke out near Brown University on Saturday while students were taking final exams.
Trump briefed on Brown University shooting, FBI responding
Donald Trump said he was briefed after the deadly shooting at Brown University. Trump commented on the horrendous shooting after returning to the White House from the Army–Navy football game.
“I have been briefed on the Brown University situation. What a terrible thing it is, and all we can do right now is pray for the victims and those that are very badly hurt,” Trump said. “It’s a shame. It’s a shame. Just pray.”
Trump said federal authorities were responding alongside local officials. He later posted on Truth Social that investigators are ongoing. “The FBI is on the scene,” Trump wrote, saying he had been briefed on the incident. “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”

Police continue searching for a male suspect in connection with the shooting at Brown University. Authorities said the person responsible is believed to be a man wearing black clothing, as police intensify efforts to locate him, according to Boston News.
Providence Police Deputy Chief Tim O’Hara said the shooter is male and was last seen dressed entirely in black.
O’Hara and Mayor Brett Smiley said the suspect exited the Barus and Holley engineering building and fled toward Hope Street.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting forensic evidence to identify the suspect. Officials said current information indicates there was a single shooter, according to the Providence Journal.
Mayor says Brown University shooting suspect still at large
Mayor Brett Smiley said police are still searching for the shooter involved in the attack near Brown University after an early report that a suspect had been detained proved incorrect.

Smiley said authorities are not aware of any additional victims and confirmed that police continue efforts to locate the suspect.
