WASHINGTON, DC: Former president Donald Trump attempted to distance himself from far-right White-nationalist ally Laura Loomer amid rising concerns from prominent Republicans on Friday, September 13.

According to Raw Story, Loomer has been spotted cozying up to the GOP nominee in recent days. She accompanied Trump to the 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York this week despite claiming that it was an "inside job," as well as flew in his plane to the September 10 presidential debate in Philadelphia.

When questioned about his association with the polarising figure, Trump failed to provide a clear response and called her a "supporter" five times instead, reported the Independent.

Donald Trump's statements on Laura Loomer

During a press conference at his Los Angeles golf resort on Friday evening, Trump stated, "Well I don’t know what they would say. Laura’s been a supporter. Just like a lot of people are supporters. She speaks very positively of the campaign,” adding, "I can’t tell Laura what to do. She’s a free spirit.”

“Laura Loomer is traveling with you on your plane. She made racist remarks about your opponent. She has also espoused 9/11 conspiracies. Do you disavow those remarks?” inquired a reporter, pushing Trump to defend his campaign.

"I have to see what those remarks are. I don’t even know what you’re talking about. She may have said something based on what you’re telling me. I‘ll go take a look and I’ll put out a statement later on,” he responded.

Trump later put out a statement on his platform, Truth Social, further distancing himself from Loomer.

“Laura Loomer doesn't work for the Campaign. She's a private citizen and longtime supporter," he wrote. "I disagree with the statements she made but, like the many millions of people who support me, she is tired of watching the Radical Left Marxists and Fascists violently attack and smear me, even to the point of doing anything to stop their Political Opponent, ME! I am now in California, which Democrats like Comrade Kamala Harris and Governor Gavin Newscum have completely DESTROYED. I will turn it all around and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! -DJT.”

Criticism of Laura Loomer within GOP

Loomer has been criticized by several GOP leaders, including far-right MAGA Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga), who once endorsed her for Congress in 2020. In a surprising turn of events, Greene came to the defense of the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, when Loomer attempted to mock her family with an offensive tweet.

In a jibe against Harris' mother who hailed from India, Loomer posted on X that if Democrats win the general election, “the White House will smell like curry & White House speeches will be facilitated via a call center.”

“This is appalling and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA,” Greene reacted on the platform. “This does not represent President Trump. This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever.”

In an interview with HuffPost on Thursday, Sen Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also slammed Loomer, stating, "We have policy disagreements but the history of this person is just really toxic. I mean, she actually called for Kellyanne Conway’s daughter to hang herself. I don’t know how this all happened, but, no, I don’t think it’s helpful. I don’t think it’s helpful at all.”

“Marjorie Taylor Greene is right. I don’t say that a lot," he added.

Loomer has reportedly launched personal attacks against both of them on social media, stating that they were “simply jealous that they were not on the plane with President Trump.”

Internet mocks Donald Trump's comments on Laura Loomer

Netizens trolled Trump for not being sincere in his efforts to distance himself from Loomer. The following tweets demonstrate the predominant takes.

"Trump basically said 'I don’t agree with what she said, BUT she is justified in saying it.' This is 2024’s 'fine people on both sides' dog whistle," wrote a user.

"Can’t un-ring that bell," stated another.

"Too little, too late," jibed a third.

"A comment about distancing himself from Loomer ended with calling the governor of our largest state 'Newscum'... he is the least presidential among us," chided a fourth.

"Trump is cornered like a rat with nowhere to run. He’s desperately resorting to extremes of racism and misogyny, and can’t even denounce Laura Loomer’s racist comments," observed a fifth.

"So now supporters can just hitch a ride on Trump’s private plane? Something just doesn’t smell right," quipped a sixth.

"Translation: she’s one of my bestie supporters and I won’t throw her under the bus, no matter what she says or does," tweeted yet another.
