WASHINGTON,DC: President Donald Trump left reporters with an unexpected mystery after joking about having “very severe problems” during a White House gathering on Thursday, October 15.

The president was discussing his personal habits at a Rose Garden luncheon honouring America’s first responders when he made the remark, then immediately acknowledged that journalists would want to know what he meant.

He also made a quip about the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Trump claims he has 'serious problems'

“I don't smoke, I don't drink but I have other problems! I have some very severe problems, but those are not one of them!” Trump told the gathering, drawing attention to his deliberately vague confession.

He then continued the joke by suggesting that revealing those problems might have prevented him from becoming president.

“If I added them to the list I wouldn't be here right now!” he said.

Trump appeared to anticipate the headlines his comments could generate, turning his attention to how the press might interpret the remark.

“The press is gonna say, what problem does he have? I probably set myself up for that one!” he said, before clarifying that he was joking rather than making a serious disclosure.

“He said he has serious problems, what are they? I actually don't know, I'm just having fun to the media,” Trump added.

The exchange came during a Rose Garden luncheon at the White House, where Trump welcomed guests for a special event recognizing first responders.

Trump has frequently spoken publicly about avoiding smoking and alcohol, crediting his late elder brother, Fred Trump, with warning him about the consequences of drinking.

In past remarks, the president has recalled that his brother repeatedly urged him to stay away from alcohol and smoking.

Trump has said he took those warnings seriously and never developed a habit of drinking or smoking.

He has also promoted prevention and recovery initiatives aimed at tackling addiction in the United States.

In January 2026, he announced the Great American Recovery Initiative, a federal effort focused on prevention, treatment and support for people affected by addiction.

Trump jokes about Butler shooting

The president also made a pointed reference to the assassination attempt at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.

During the event, Steve Hirsch, representing the National Volunteer Fire Council, presented Trump with a firefighter’s helmet intended to symbolise protection.

As Hirsch explained the gesture, Trump interrupted with a remark about the attack.

“I wish you gave it to me a little bit earlier,” he said.

He then made the reference explicit saying “I could have used this in Butler. This would have been very helpful.”

Trump was wounded in the ear when a gunman opened fire during the Pennsylvania rally on July 13, 2024.

The shooting killed attendee Corey Comperatore and injured others. The attack prompted extensive scrutiny of the US Secret Service and its security arrangements.
