GENEVA, SWITZERLAND: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Sunday, November 23, that he informed President Donald Trump that talks with Ukrainian officials were "very positive" and that the POTUS is "pleased" with the "most productive" meeting on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Switzerland, Rubio described the "extensive engagement" from Ukraine on the US-backed 28-point peace plan, which is widely considered favorable to Russia.

After the conclusion of Sunday’s discussions in Geneva, Marco Rubio said, "It was very positive, I’m telling you today was the most productive."

Asked by CNN’s Matthew Chance about President Donald Trump’s earlier comments lashing out at Ukraine for what the president described as a lack of gratitude, Rubio said those tensions had been smoothed over.

The Secretary of State said he had subsequently spoken with the president. He said, "Today, and we’ve talked to him since, I think he’s quite pleased at the reports we’ve given him about the amount of progress that’s been made." Rubio told reporters that going into the talks, there was "one goal", to "try to narrow" the disagreements around key points.

He said, "We have achieved that today in a very substantial way," noting that the final agreement will require sign-off from Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Moreover, Russia will also need to sign off on the plan to end the nearly four-year war. However, Rubio said there are still some sticking points, characterizing the outstanding issues as "a couple issues that we need to continue to work on."

"I don’t want to declare victory or finality here. There’s still some work to be done, but we are much further ahead today, at this time, than we were when we began this morning," he said.

Trump slams Ukraine for 'zero gratitude' amid peace talks

President Donald Trump accused Ukraine’s leadership of showing "zero gratitude" for US support while criticizing Kyiv amid backlash over his administration’s proposed 28-point Russia-Ukraine peace framework.

In a Truth Social post, the POTUS denounced Ukraine’s "leadership" without naming President Volodymyr Zelensky and blamed Ukrainian leaders and former President Joe Biden for the continuing conflict.

He wrote, "The War between Russia and Ukraine is a violent and terrible one that, with strong and proper US and Ukrainian leadership, would have never happened." Trump added that if he had won in 2020, "Putin would never have attacked! It was only when he saw Sleepy Joe in action that he said, ‘Now is my chance!’ The rest is history… I inherited a war that should have never happened, a war that is a loser for everyone, especially the millions of people that have so needlessly died."

Trump then accused Ukraine’s leaders of failing to recognize Washington’s help, even though Zelensky publicly thanked Trump and the US before and after their reportedly tense Oval Office meeting in February 2025.

"Ukraine ‘leadership’ has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia," the POTUS wrote.

Trump added that the US continues to sell "massive amounts of weapons to NATO, for distribution to Ukraine," contrasting it with what he called Biden’s giveaways.
