WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Tuesday, March 17, warned that he will withhold his endorsement from any Republican senator who votes against the “SAVE America Act,” escalating pressure as the legislation moves toward a Senate vote.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump described the bill as one of the most “important and consequential” measures in US history and said opposition would carry political consequences.

The President said a “no” vote would result in a “guaranteed loss” in future elections and added that he will “NEVER (EVER!)” endorse candidates who oppose the bill.

The legislation has already passed the House and now faces key hurdles in the Senate, where Republican support will be critical to its passage.

Strict voter ID and citizenship requirements

The SAVE America Act proposes broad changes to federal election procedures, including a requirement that individuals provide documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.

The bill also mandates stricter photo identification requirements for voters.

The legislation also includes provisions aimed at limiting certain forms of mail-in voting.

Trump has argued that the changes are necessary to strengthen election security, while critics say they could create barriers for eligible voters who may not have immediate access to required documentation, such as passports or birth certificates.

The proposed framework would require states to verify and record citizenship status for new registrants under federal guidelines.

Bans on transgender surgeries and sports

The bill also includes provisions addressing social policy issues. According to the administration, the legislation would prohibit gender transition procedures for minors and restrict participation in women’s sports to individuals assigned female at birth.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the inclusion of these measures reflects what the administration views as widely supported policy positions.

She stated that combining these provisions with election reforms underscores their importance within the broader legislative agenda.

Guaranteed political loss for GOP opponents

Trump’s statement also served as a direct message to Republican lawmakers, indicating that opposition to the bill could impact future political support from the President.

He said each component of the legislation could be used as a campaign issue against lawmakers who vote against it in the 2026 midterm elections.

The administration has signaled that passage of the SAVE America Act remains a top domestic priority as it seeks to advance the bill through the Senate.
