WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump brushed off a suggestion to build a modernized White House press room, joking that he had no interest in making life easier for reporters.

The exchange came during a crowded press event at the White House on Monday, August 11, where Trump addressed multiple topics, including his deployment of National Guard troops to aid the Metropolitan Police Department in tackling crime in the nation’s capital.

Donald Trump teases packed press room crowd during briefing

Reporters packed into the briefing room noted how full it was, prompting Trump to turn to his “superstar” press secretary Karoline Leavitt and ask, “Is this the largest crowd that you’ve ever seen?”

Leavitt replied, “This is definitely the most packed briefing, and I think all of you would agree. I think that’s why we need to build a ballroom.”

Brian Glenn, a correspondent for Real America’s Voice, followed up with a question: “You’re building a big, beautiful ballroom. Could we build a big, beautiful briefing room? Updated with technology, more seats!”

Trump quickly dismissed the idea, saying, “No, I don’t want to do that. I don’t want you to be comfortable. No, I don’t want to make life comfortable,” sparking laughter among the reporters.

Karoline Leavitt shares ballroom project details

The ballroom plan, expected to cost around $200 million and funded by Trump and private donors, will provide a dedicated space for state dinners, official events, and ceremonial gatherings.

Leavitt explained last month that the White House currently has to set up “a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance” for major functions.

She added that the new ballroom would be “a much-needed and exquisite addition.”

The planned 90,000-square-foot addition will seat about 650 guests and keep the classical White House design intact.

Social media users praise Donald Trump’s sense of humor

Online reactions poured in following the moment. “PRO TIP: The moment you get comfortable, you stop growing, folks. Trump is just giving them some tough love 😂,” one person posted on X.

Another user wrote, “Honestly, he’s got a point. The press isn’t there to get comfy, they’re there to do their job and be held accountable, just like everyone else.”

“LOL! Trump is the GOAT with handling the media!,” commented one, while another added, “Love Trump’s sense of humor!”

One more person summed it up: “Classic Trump! Keeping the press on their toes, one roast at a time!”
