WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump escalated his attacks on Rep Ilhan Omar on Sunday, November 30, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that the Minnesota Democrat should be “thrown the hell out of the country” over longstanding allegations about her marital history. His comments came as he and first lady Melania Trump returned to the White House from their Thanksgiving stay in Florida.

Trump’s remarks revived years-old claims that Omar fraudulently entered the United States by marrying her brother, allegations she has repeatedly denied but which continue to circulate in conservative media and online political circles.

Trump repeats explosive claim about Ilhan Omar’s immigration

Speaking to reporters during the flight from Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump asserted that Ilhan Omar “supposedly came into our country by marrying her brother,” adding that if true, “she shouldn’t be a congresswoman, and we should throw her the hell out of the country!"

His comments echoed a similar attack he made in September, when he described Somalia as plagued by instability and corruption before questioning Omar’s right to “tell us how to run America.”

In a Truth Social post, Trump had written, “P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship??? What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”

Allegations about Ilhan Omar’s marital history resurface

The controversy surrounding Ilhan Omar’s past marriage has followed her since her rise in Minnesota politics. Public records show she was legally married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009 and they separated in 2011. Elmi has also been identified as her brother, a claim Omar’s team has repeatedly dismissed as politically motivated and false.

In 2017, Omar sought a default divorce from Elmi, telling the court she could not locate him. Around the same time, conservative outlets reported that she was suspected of using campaign funds in connection with the divorce proceedings, an allegation that sparked an ethics complaint but did not lead to criminal charges.

Omar later married her political consultant, Tim Mynett, further fueling scrutiny from her critics.

Ilhan Omar’s political rise and ongoing scrutiny

Ilhan Omar was elected to represent Minnesota’s District 60B in 2016, becoming a national figure upon taking her oath on the Quran. Her ascent to Congress in 2018 as one of the first two Muslim women ever elected solidified her national profile but also amplified partisan attacks, particularly from Trump and his supporters.

While the allegations regarding her marriage to Elmi have persisted for years, no official investigation has substantiated claims of immigration fraud. Still, the issue remains a recurring flashpoint in political debates, resurfacing whenever tensions between Trump and Omar escalate.
