WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump announced that the 2027 NFL Draft will take place at the National Mall in Washington, DC, during a press conference in the White House on Monday, May 5, the Daily Mail reported.

The 78-year-old POTUS was accompanied by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell during the announcement. Later, Trump suggested that he would also be playing a major role in the event.

Donald Trump hints he may pick No 1 player in 2027 NFL Draft

After the White House press conference on Monday, Donald Trump joined Hugh Hewitt for a podcast interview over the phone on Wednesday, May 7.

The president suggested he could be the one to announce the No 1 overall pick of the draft, an honor that's usually reserved for the NFL commissioner.

Hewitt asked Trump if Goodell made the offer to the POTUS, noting that he was not very popular with the MAGA base.

"He did actually," noted the Commander-in-Chief, but he did get the year of the draft incorrect, which cast doubt on the accuracy of his claim.

"It's the 2026 draft, actually," Trump mistakenly corrected Hewitt on his show. "And it's going to be exciting, It's great for Washington, DC. We need it a little bit."

The NFL Draft was primarily held in New York and Philadelphia, but began changing venues in 2015. The 2025 NFL Draft was held in Green Bay, while the 2026 Draft is being hosted in Pittsburgh.

Washington, DC, is yet to host the event, and the National Mall can accommodate thousands of spectators.

"I don't think there's ever been anything like that," Trump said about the venue. "That's a good idea... Maybe we could use it for other things also."

Internet tells Donald Trump to focus on important issues after 2027 NFL Draft announcement

People on the internet were not pleased with President Donald Trump occupying himself with the 2027 NFL Draft when he has other important issues to pay attention to in the country. They took to the comments section of the Daily Mail article and asked him to "focus on his presidential duties."

"Shouldn’t he be spending his time leading the country?" asked a reader.

"Keep him occupied and way from anything economical!" commented another.

"Oh for Pete's sake! He needs to focus on his presidential duties, which are far more important," one person wrote.

"I wonder how much that will cost the taxpayers. He is so lame," another remarked.

"Trump needs to just stay away," one individual declared.

"He’s involved in everything but taking care of the country," another added.
