WASHINGTON, DC: In a playful but combative interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, President Donald Trump gave supporters a behind-the-scenes look at how he came up with his latest nickname for Democrats.

Trump, speaking during his high-profile trip to China, broke down the thought process behind the term 'Dumocrats,' proudly explaining how he changed the word 'Democrats' into what he called a sharper political jab at his opponents.

Trump says he dropped one letter to create new political insult

The exchange began while Trump discussed the recently approved farm bill and criticized Democrats for opposing parts of the legislation.

Trump sat down with Hannity to discuss his ongoing summit with China and his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

At one point in the interview, Trump mentioned his possible deal with Xi on Chinese purchases of US soybeans. He made a quick detour about farmers and the new farm bill that passed, before he criticized Democrats for opposing the legislation.

“I must have gotten 95% of the farm vote. And by the way, we just signed the farm bill. We just approved the farm bill in Congress, which a lot of people thought was not going to happen,” he said. “You know, the Democrats are against farmers. I say, how can they be against– add that to the men in women’s sports. The Democrats are against farmers, can you believe it? So, anyway. They’re defective.”

Trump then teased Hannity about a new nickname he had recently started using for Democrats.

After sharing his linguistic invention, the president explained to Hannity how he had conceived of it.

New nickname for opponents shows Trump’s humor

The president appeared especially pleased with the simplicity of the insult and walked Hannity through exactly how he created it.

“I came up with a new name, I don’t know if I should–“

“Dumocrats. Because they’re dumb. They’re dumb. It’s D-U-M. I got rid of the B. So you’re only changing one letter, right? E goes, and the U comes. It’s a Dumocrat.”

Hannity laughed as Trump continued elaborating on the nickname and praised the president’s ability to dominate political conversations.

“You take up more space in people’s heads than any one person on the face of this Earth,” Hannity told Trump during the exchange.

Trump then revealed the nickname first came to him while criticizing House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“Yeah. I was talking about a guy, Hakeem Jeffries. He’s a very low IQ individual, and I talked about him. I said, “He’s a dumb guy. He’s a Dumocrat.” And I said, “Whoa, what a great name for this.””

The president has long been known for creating nicknames for political opponents, a tactic that became one of the defining features of his political style, dating back to his first presidential campaign.
