WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump, on Monday, July 14, revealed that first lady Melania Trump has played a key role in shaping his current stance on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said Melania frequently pointed out that Russian missile strikes often followed his seemingly positive conversations with Putin about a potential peace deal in Ukraine.
Trump’s remarks come as he intensifies pressure on Russia, warning of steep tariffs if Putin does not commit to peace negotiations within 50 days, and confirming a new weapons deal with NATO allies to support Ukraine.

Melania’s comments made Trump question Vladimir Putin’s ceasefire promises
Donald Trump described how Melania’s remarks following his calls with Vladimir Putin made him realize the Russian leader wasn’t following through on ceasefire discussions.

"I go home. I tell the first lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.’ She said, ‘Oh, really? another city was just hit,'" he said.
"There's times I'd get home. I'd say, 'First lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir. I think we're finished.' And then I'll turn on the television, or she'll say to me one time, ‘Wow, that’s strange because they just bombed a nursing home,'" Trump recalled in another conversation. "I'd say, ‘What?’"

Donald Trump gives Vladimir Putin 50 days for peace
President Trump on Monday confirmed that he has agreed to sell arms to NATO just moments after announcing that Vladimir Putin has 50 days to secure a peace deal with Ukraine or face “100%” tariffs.

“This is again European nations standing up,” Rutte said. “I’ve been in contact with many countries. I can tell you at this moment Germany, massively, but also Finland and Denmark and Sweden and Norway - we have the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Canada - they all want to be part of this.”
“We are very, very unhappy with [Russia], and we're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent," Trump said in the Oval Office. "I'm disappointed in President Putin. I thought we would've had a deal two months ago."
Trump also said he was considering giving Ukraine more aid. He confirmed American weapons, including Patriot missiles, would be sent but insisted the US would not foot the bill.
“We’ve made a deal today where we are going to be sending [Ukraine] weapons and [Europe] is going to be paying for them,” he stated. “We - the United States - will not be having any payment made. We’re not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they’re going to be paying for it.”
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said, “In the coming days, you'll see weapons flowing at a record level to help Ukraine defend themselves. One of the biggest miscalculations Putin has made is to play Trump. And you just watch, in the coming days and weeks, there's going to be a massive effort to get Putin to the table.”
Social media hails Melania’s instincts after Donald Trump credits her on Vladimir Putin
Following Trump’s revelation that First Lady Melania often pointed out Russia's continued missile attacks after his “wonderful conversations” with Vladimir Putin, users on X erupted with reactions, many praising Melania’s instincts and even suggesting she deserves a bigger role in diplomacy.
One user posted, "I voted for Melania as well."
Another wrote, "Melania for president!"
A widely shared comment said, "Even Melania has better foreign policy instincts than Trump — and she’s not even on the ballot. When your own wife can see through Putin’s lies, maybe it’s time to stop bragging about your ‘wonderful conversations.’"

Another post read, "I would like to nominate Melania Trump for the @NobelPrize. It appears every time Putin charms @POTUS Donald Trump on the phone about his desire for peace, Melania reminds him he just bombed another city. And this has led to his sending JD Vance to Disney & Patriots to Ukraine."

Melania Trump’s communist-era roots shaped her view of Vladimir Putin
Melania Trump has not been a visible presence around the White House during Donald Trump’s second term, spending the majority of her time in New York, where their son Barron attends New York University.
The first lady has experience with communist rule. Melania was born in then-Yugoslavia, which was a country under communist control. She lived in a communist-style apartment.

Her family lived well, but she denied that her father, Viktor Knavs, was a communist.
In her memoir, 'Melania', she attacked descriptions of her father as a communist, saying it was "not reflective of his political beliefs" and party membership was "mandatory."
"His Communist Party affiliation was a mandatory induction, as the party had implemented an automatic monthly disbursement of a portion of his salary," she claimed. "Growing up, I felt more connected to our neighbors in Italy or Austria than to other communist countries in Eastern Europe," she went on.
She recalled going to an Elton John concert at age 14 and later on, one with Tina Turner. She attended Formula 1 races with her father. With her older sister, Ines, she traveled to Venice. She skied the Alps and took summer trips to the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.

"Despite living in a region that was often seen as separate from the rest of the world, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to travel and explore different cultures," she wrote.
Melania has also met Putin. She joined Trump in July 2018, in his first term, at a summit with the Russian leader in Helsinki.
